I uploaded my workout as usual and received this email from C2:
You recently uploaded a workout to the Concept2 Online Logbook that included data from a connected heart rate monitor. Unfortunately, as you haven't given Concept2 permission to store health-related data, we can't save your heart rate data to provide you with any heart rate analysis. If you wish to see such analysis in the future, please grant access to the Logbook to store your health-related data. We only use data from devices that you connect to Concept2 equipment and we will never share this information without your consent. Learn more about our privacy policies.
All my previous workouts with the hrm show the numbers and I haven't changed anything. I went and updated the permissions but hr for this session is lost. Not the end of the world but a minor annoyance. I don't recall ever seeing this message before. Anyone know what gives?

I got a popup like that when I connected ergData this morning. I gave them permission, but I'd like to know what's up as well. I read about half of the notice before giving in and pressing OK, but didn't like some of what I read.

I'm in the USA. Per Rowan's profile, he's in the UK.

I'm in the UK and just approved it in the app myself.

At the outset of my second workout today, the ErgData app asked for permission. It did not for the first.

After I saw this thread, I opened ergdata and got asked to accept the storing of health data. Had no workout today, so I think it will work immediately next time.

For research purposes, I connected ErgData again after my second workout. It did not ask me again for permission.

The other sites to which I upload workouts, Garmin and Fetcheveryone, haven't said anything and are logging hr data as before. Only C2 needed the permissions. Odd, but there must be a reason.

The blurb was just about allowing the user to give actual consent to store the data rather than implied consent by using the platform with things connected.
there's a radio button now in the settings if you look, so the consent can also be withdrawn at any time as well - though no idea if that would wipe Hr data from previous rows or just going forward.
I've no intention of testing it either

EU regulations hit health metrics pretty hard. Guess it's easier to get the OK from everyone than to go down the rabbit hole of knowing where people actually are when they upload a workout. This is the same stuff that makes you give web pages consent to store/read cookies by use type.
Also UK plus some US states are explicitly following EU GDPR standards on data protection at least partially and more places are moving that direction, so it gets even harder to be selective on who you ask for permission. If C2 is selective then they need to monitor and change policy or code as new laws appear.

There are some new EU laws coming into effect this year and later on, specifically targetting transmission and storage of sensitive data. As HR data is health data and that is considered extremely sensitive under EU law, this probably is an effect of that. I guess that C2 liked a nice clean distinction in their data and activated in their new season, allowing them to understand the data easier as well.
Garmin already complied with this as their GDPR approach was quite rigerous. It had to be, because Garmin also has a service that uses their watch for remote monitoring of patients. So you can already delete your data and opt out of data processing (in the Garmin connect app you find it under Settings, Privacy). Omron (heartrate and blood pressure) has a similar approach, and splits their data in a US and non-US section.
