Sometimes you just have to: Make it happen!

Post by RowingRax » November 2nd, 2023, 10:59 am

I rowed a half marathon this morning. Even after eating my breakfast, I had not planned to do it.

I had been thinking of a training plan and completing it in 2024.(I have been rowing 10k m regularly)
I sat on the rower this morning, deciding what to row and just set the clock at 21097 meters' and went for it.
I was slow but now I have my name on the ranking. 1hr52.24. 2.39.8 min /500.

As Arnold Schwarzenegger says: Don't have a plan B. (Make Plan A work).

In life, if you have been thinking of completing something- Just Make it Happen, go for it!

Have a great day- I am going for a lie down!

Well done, that's a fantastic effort! Going from 10k to 21k is a massive jump and a long time on the erg.

I've never done anything longer than 10k, but you've inspired me to give it a go sometime.

Thank you, Rob,
Sometimes, you just need things to all line up.
House was empty, I had the time and I had a rest day yesterday.
Good luck, give it a go. Just take it slow for the first half. I cover the clock up.

Great achievement! 💪👌

I was never into longer endurance sessions, but did the same in the beginning - programmed a HM and did it. Now it's one of my standard sessions.

:D that's a great effort when you've not gone over 10k previously. Any plans to do it again, or go further?

Way to go!
I run in the mud, I sweat on the erg, and I happily battle the years...

Really nice job! Sometimes when you're feeling it, you need to just go for it like you did. Well done!

Congrats - I did something very similar the first time; but built up slightly more gradually

On 22nd Oct I did my first row longer than an hour, 3rd Nov I'd rowed 1:30:00 in a single session and 18th Nov I rowed my first HM - aim just to finish it no pace goals/

I've only done one other HM, April this year, but I'm working towards a 3rd one where I hope to take another big chunk of time off.

Severe jump from 10k to M/2. I love it when no plan at all comes together. Might want to try it again with a plan and a goal in addition to finishing. I managed 13 HMs in my time (of being able to do one) but the Full M was a bridge too far. I finished the first and never once entertained the thought of doing another. I also did a buildup to 36k continuous prior to trying for 42k. A friend told me after that he’d never try the FM if he couldn’t “do it well.” I resented his comment but I had to credit his rationality. Phillippides managed to get to Sparta before the battle of Marathon was yesterday’s news (in some, but not all accounts.)

Great attitude and very impressive. As someone who has to plan everything (I'm completely devoid of spontaneity), I salute you!

I saw this post and it encouraged me to do my second HM. I set out the same way you did...set the PM for 21097 and just started rowing at a leisurely pace. It was quite a bit slower than my first one seven years ago (1:39 or 2:21/500m), but my focus was on getting it done versus setting any PBs. I probably won't do it again anytime soon (I'm mostly a 5-7K and strength training guy), but I do feel a sense of accomplishment. Thanks for the motivation.

Excellent, well done.
Now I will have to do another HM to match you.
