Do I need a seatpad?
Do I need a seatpad?
Hi, quite new to rowing (have done it also some years ago).
I'm doing 1 hour training 3 times a week since one month.
Between 45 and 50 minutes I start to have some bother to the seat zone. Around 55 minutes I'm really starting to desire a help or some comfort and the last minutes are unpleasant.
Do I need to buy a seat pad? I mean, is maybe my fault: am I rowing with a bad technique or am I still quite untrained and with some other session will I develop more resistance?
Thanks

Re: Do I need a seatpad?
Hi, I am new to rowing - nearly 4 weeks in the game.
Two weeks after starting I performed my first HM, so was acting more than an hour on the slide without no irritation or discomfort.
Perhaps it is related to how you are sitting. If you pelvic is not tilted forward you will sit mainly on your bones of your butt (don't know the word for them
). If you tilt your pelvis you get support from your glutes, the surface to sit on is bigger.

Re: Do I need a seatpad?
Thanks, that's a good feedback.
In reality I'm "quite" skinny, maybe I have less "meat" to protect me
. (Reading your signature I'm shorter than you of 1 cm but I weight 12kg less!)
Anyway I'll certainly try what you said.

Re: Do I need a seatpad?
Hehe, ok, no experience with beeing skinny, perhaps this is another problem
Do you think your back/pelvis positioning is right/good? This is absolutely related to technique, so this could be a reason.

Re: Do I need a seatpad?
I will definitely check my pelvis position and let you know...I have to search at least a video/image of a perfect position to compare mine.

Been there too.... LWT here so little glute protection. I started with the C2 pad which was ok but ended up with the Citius Remex which is expensive but works for me.

This video for sitting position --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00bIjs3FblE
Many people use seat pads. Some people don't. Plenty of threads on this forum describing people's preference for pads. You are new to rowing, even with perfect form, your seat is going to hurt on long rows. A pad/cushion/etc. will help. Some people use packaging bubble wrap and say it's better than any pad.
Concept2 sells a stick on pad. I use it. It comes with cut-out holes and the suggestion to try the pad with and without the holes filled it. For me holes, filled in is best.

Thanks! I was searching and I saw this video yesterday!
Tomorrow, with the new session, I'll try it.
Bubble wrap...interesting. I just received a pack from amazon...I'll try also that, love Macgyver solutions.

Re: Do I need a seatpad?
As others say, some bubblewrap. Or a small towel folded over, which is what I use. After a few sessions it more or less sticks itself to the seat ...

This pad was recommended here and I've had it since I got my rower in Dec. Happy butt...

Re: Do I need a seatpad?
First experiment.
I rowed always for an hour but I didn't check for my posture on the seat, only changed the feet position that I discovered was wrong.
I was at 2 but the right postion for me is 4, maybe also 3(I have 42 of foot, 9 for US measure).
Well, only thanks to this change I started to feel lightly unconfortable at 50-55 minutes and I finish the workout easily (check the first post of this topic).
More important, you won't believe, I had a better result in meters rowed...16% more!
Next time I will be aware also of the seat posture. Only to identify "scientifically" every flaw, one by one.

Re: Do I need a seatpad?
Your seating position will have an effect on this, but also don't underestimate how you can get used to it. I used to feel it from about 45 mins in, but now I don't use anything at all, and that counts for a failed 100k when I got to 72k.Tyrso wrote: ↑February 13th, 2022, 8:28 amFirst experiment.

The crazy thing is I can't sit on a cinema seat for longer than an hour without fidgeting.

Agree entirely, i erged for 11.5 ish hours recently, my PITA developed after about 6.5hrs despite having a Citius Remex seat lus 2 x concept seat pads (its what i used for all my training leading up to this).Dangerscouse wrote: ↑February 13th, 2022, 10:38 am

I came to the conclusions that posture is probably a big factor
Age 61, on 2/01/22 I rowed 115,972m 11hrs 17m 57s and raised £19k for https://www.havenshospices.org.uk/ Thanks for all the support

Re: Do I need a seatpad?
Place me in the camp that favors a properly shaped rowing seat for maximum comfort. Padding does nothing to alter seat contour (except the Citius Remex) & is, at best, merely a band-aid solution.
I lean towards trying the cheaper solutions first, but if these are not satisfactory, then one must search for a proper rowing seat.

Re: Do I need a seatpad?
Everyone is different. I started using one years ago for anything over an hour. Now, I use it all the time. I tried 4 or 5. The thicker they were, the worse they felt. This simple thin one works great for me.
