What are your rowing goals for the 2018/2019 season?

Post by lancecampeau » March 30th, 2018, 11:58 pm

Hi gang... My first full season of rowing is about to wrap up and I managed to complete most of the goals I'd set for myself (500m @ 1:30, sub 7 2K, sub 39 min 10k & full marathon). The only goal left for this season is the 15k/60 min. One month to get this done and I'm confident its possible. Just turned 44 and now starting to think about goals for the 2018/2019 next season... I've got 2 in mind, and they are formidable...

- sub 18 min 5K
- sub 9 hour 100k

Realistically, I view the 100k as a 3 year project... so if I don't get it done this season it's no big deal... However doing a 5K @ 1:48 pace is something I really want to accomplish in the 2018/2019 season.

My big goals are to keep rowing, row more metres, and also to eat better and get leaner. If I can do that I'll be happy but for times, I'd say the following.

60 minutes - 15k (should be possible as I've done 14,929m already)
30 minutes - 8000m (7,851 current PB but not tried for a while so think this is possible too)
10k - under 39 minutes (currently 20 seconds away from this, so need to work on it)
5k - under 18:30 (current best is 18:58 so some work to be done here)
2k - 6:50 (current PB splits suggest I have more in me than 6:59.2 but will have to up my game to get to 6:50)
44 years old - 198cm/6'6" - England

PBs -
1k 3:15.4 (Jun 2020) | 2k 6:51.4 (Feb 2019) | 5k 18:16.9 (Oct 2019) | 30min 8,016m (Apr 2019) | 10k 37:53.6 (May 2019) | 60min 15,254m (Apr 2019) | HM 1:25:38.4 (Apr 2019)

Rowing since March 2017. Real name is Alasdair.

Maybe I'm less goal-oriented than you guys but perhaps it's my age and realizing my limitations too. My goals are pretty simple - train as hard as I can without getting hurt and be able to train consistently harder. If I can do that, the times will follow.

Mine are pretty simple.
Put a time or distance against all the ranked rows up to FM. And then keep improving. I think the 100k is a long term goal that would be at the minimum this time next year and most likely the season after.

That's a really good idea, I'm going to steal it. Well, maybe only up to HM. That's 12 different pieces I think and doing them I think might help make it more interesting for me.

Haven’t really thought about this years targets.
Haven’t done a TT in about 6 months. Might wait until after the 50.
100k and a 24 hr tandem looks good.

I really want to beat all of my PBs from FM down to 2k. Below 2k doesn't really interest me.

I'm still toying with the idea of a 24hr and possibly doing another 100km again.

still a relative newbie, so:

start the beginner pete plan.
keep improving my average watts, i'm on about 100 now which feels relatively low but when i started i was only pulling at about 40 watts. i can't imagine how i would pull that little now, like i guess my technique was just way off cos even the end of a 8k slog or whatever i'm still comfortably pulling twice that now.
get a bit faster.

i don't want to just row aimlessly but feel i'm still just building technique really.

Piece by piece you'll keep building it up. It's great to look back and see your progress too

I'm too new to really know what I can do, but I hope to get under 8min for 2k and if I get there, hit the longer distances at that pace (5k, 10k, maybe even HM).

Being so light doesn't help. I was reading an article on cycling saying that 3W/kg is the level of an average fit person, 5W/kg for a top amateur and 6W/kg for professionals. I'm 55kg now, so 5x55=275W, which is a pace of 1:48. I'd be interested to see any similar figures for rowing.

I'm going to start the Pete Plan this week. Not sure how many cycles, but I do well with a structured plan. The BPP last fall was very motivating for me as an introduction to rowing.

I would like to see my 2k time well under 8 minutes this season. I would also like to complete a HM.

I'm currently doing 20min/18spm steady rows @ 2:45, I want to increase that to 30minutes in the coming months and as for pace, I'm not sure I should pick a goal yet. I expect to make some pretty good improvements over the next few months as I get a bit fitter.

I'm a total beginner though (2 weeks in), so my real 2018/2019 goal is to still be rowing at the end of the season. I'm sure I'll make more than enough progress just through that alone for a first season :) Season after I'll set some real goals.

I'll add that to my goals as well. In addition, I'd like to do a sub-40 10k (I did 42:21.5 on 3/25/18) and complete a HM.
