Duathlon Concept

Post by JadeMerrett » July 8th, 2017, 10:19 pm

Hi all, been contemplating this for some time, given the number of runners/ex-runners floating about the forums!

My logic being, mix the two sports increasing grounds for gains in cardio, weight loss, overall conditioning and endurance, plus something new to maintain motivation with the added benefit of cross training "reducing demand on problematic muscle groups, lower back etc". In addition to the above, as an overall fitness rating, there's no need to consider light weight V'S heavy weight categories as heavier weighted rowers will have an advantage in the rowing component whereas those lighter in build will have the benefit of reduced running times!

My rationale for distances are loosely based on ITU Duathlon Sprint distance "5k run/20k ride/2.5k run", consider the ride component i.e. 20k bike ride for a conditioned athlete takes around 30 mins, therefor substitute the ride for indoor rowing of similar time, equates to 8k on the erg!!

I have also considered a distance encompassing the bench mark 2000m erg, so the following distances have been formulated!

Super Sprint 1k run / 2k erg / 1k run
Sprint 5k run / 8k erg / 2.5k run
Olympic 10k run / 16k erg / 5k run

For those interested I have also considered estimated approximate "Intermediate Athlete" times for both male and female, note these will be adjusted in time once I have a better evidence base to consider!

Super Sprint - Male 0:16 - Female 0:17
Sprint - Male 1:02.00 - Female 1:10.00
Olympic - Male 2:04.00 Female 2:14.00

I'm hoping those who are interested will contribute to the post and include their time for the relevant distances but I ask than when posting your times you provide the appropriate data in the following format:

Event Distance
Overall Time "the time is inclusive of transition to and from the erg"
Treadmill or Road Running given the variation in treadmill accuracy, records will be kept for road running only, however please post your training/race results if completed on the treadmill for interst and feedback from others
Male/Female and Age Category "Concept2 age categories"
Location Country

Perhaps cut and paste the following;

Event
Time
Road - Treadmill
Gender and Age Category
Location

I will endeavoure to keep an updated spreadsheet containing records and post periodically, if interest warrants I will consider a specific website containing information, events, results, training advice etc!

Thanks so much in advance for those interested and willing to contribute
