Preparing For a 6km Erg Test

Ok guys,
So for some reason our school has incorporated a 6km erg test on top of our 2km erg and scull trials for the trialling process in our schools eights.
Currently my 5km is a 19:28 and my 2km is 7:19. I average about 26 strokes per minute on my 2km (dont ansk why haha). What preparation should I do for the 6km trial (ergs, proper warmup) and also finally based off of the information I've given you, what should I rate on it and what split should I try to hold?
Thanks guys.

This might be a really stupid question but why does the 6km distance crop up regularly? Is this more to do with OTW rowing. With erging most people tend to talk of 500m, 1Km, 2Km, 5km, 10km, 30mins, 60mins, HM, FM etc.

Yep, otw often uses 6k as a selection criterium.

No, otw is very much 2k only, yes there are some longer courses, but most is 2k. Aerobic fitness is super important in rowing, so looking more on the longer side is pretty common.
For practical reasons longer rowing is not handy, setting courses or even having enough water.

Customary erg test distance for head races approximating 3+/- miles in length. There are a number of these. Head of Charles River and Head of Schuylkill most well-known in eastern U.S.

The 6k has been the standard college endurance measure for quite a number of years now - at least in the US. You would have to dig back a long way to find out why this was chosen. Most head races are closer to 5k, but there is a lot of variation. It is my impression that the 6k test is strictly for endurance and not related to a race distance.

The 6k is also used by the Danish international rowers a couple of times pr year as a test.
