Lower Back Pains (please help)

Post by lyons9890 » March 21st, 2006, 7:51 pm

i know a lot of these threads have been started recently, but my pain is a little bit different.

The other day my crew was doing a quick power peice...we were just practicing getting our stroke rating up to race pace, because we have a race this saturday (our first race of the year i might add) During this practice peice however, my back gave up on me. It hurt a lot at the time and it is in the lower right side of my back (muscle pain)...now when ever i row, right when i come up to the catch and push back with my legs, i get this really really tight feeling in my back and it kills the rest of my drive, almost as if someone is squeezing the muscle right as i drive.

**I would really appreciate some help, because i wouldnt wanna miss the first race of the year**

Thank you,
Geoff

Geoff, can you describe a little more what you mean by "my back gave up on me"?

Was this a sudden event during your practice piece? If so, what were you doing--specifically--when it happened? Do you remember where in the stroke you were? Was it like your back wasn't strong enough to support the pressure and a muscle released? you lost your posture? or you tore something?

You said it "hurt a lot" and is "muscle pain" in the "lower right side of your back" which is now aggravated "right when [you] come up to the catch and push back with [your] legs" so that you "get this really really tight feeling" in your back that "kills the rest of my drive." Because you say it starts hurting when you're still on the recovery, moving into the catch, I'm wondering if the position of your back, as you come into the catch isn't quite as strong and stable as it should be? Are you sitting up on your sitz bones? With your pelvis neither tucked under nor extended back (both positions are weaker positions for your back)? So that you can pivot from the hip, without rounding the back just above the pelvis?

Does this hurt all the time? When you move at other times? or only when you're rowing?

How long has this been going on? I don't have the background to address an actual acute injury (which it sounds like you may have!!!)--but thought more info might help someone else to help... And if you haven't already, you might want to see a medical professional of some sort to eliminate or deal with the possibility of an acute injury. Depending on what you've done, they might be able to prescribe a brace of some sort you could wear while you're re-hab'ing from the injury--maybe enough to let you row. Perhaps a good massage therapist/physical therapist might be able to help? What does your coach say?

Best wishes!

Let me just start of by saying...i sure as hell wish i could just describe it to you in person.....

Ok your first request is to describe what i meant by saying "my back gave out on me" ...im not sure i really phrased that correctly but what it felt like was a big muscle cramp in my lower back..this was very sudden, and right on the drive of a stroke...what i meant by 'right when i come up to the catch' was when i first push off (again its really hard to explain) but yes, it hurts right when i push off and all the way through the drive (most of the pain is immidietly off the drive so it just kills all the speed of my stroke)

You also asked if my back hurt doing other things...and that was a good question, because i definitly should have mentioned that in my post ::: If i were to answer yes or no, i would say NO...my back hurts a little bit when i lean a certain way, but nothing to cry about...its mainly rowing which hurts)

Bringing up the position I am sitting in is also a good point...i have really long legs and a short torso, so i cant get as much lean in to my rigger when im recovering...my coach promised he would give me one of those seat pad things, which would sord of rais my torso, giving me more height, and a better lean (i am also currently working on my position)

This has been going on only for a few days (since Saturday) and i know it is best just to give it time, but there are many ways to look at it...first of all i have my first race this Saturday, so im hoping i will be gold by then, also if i can get help with certain stretches, and lower ab work, hopefully this wont happepn to me again

About a doctor: Im seeing one tommorow thank god!!! He should hopefully be able to help out a lot, i just thought it wouldnt hurt getting some advice from experienced rowers.

Thanks again, and please reply! :D

Hamstrings. Stretch them properly.

More so on your "inside" leg. Coz when you row sweep, that's the one that doesn't get to unfurl as freely as it should do during the drive.

Untightened hamstrings then stop pulling your glutes/lower back muscles which is causing the spasm.

Hi im no physio but it sounds like you got a condition runners get, Piriformis Syndrome (if the leg pain is like someone gripping your hamstring). Do a google to see if your symptons are the same, there are some stretching exercises to help this condition.
