Yoga for C2 Rowers?

Post by TheLuhks » March 19th, 2013, 6:57 pm

I've recently moved to a place with a Concept 2 machine. I have found that when I row 7 times a week, I tend to get worn out and injure myself. Twice now, I've had muscle strains when I've worked out every day for two weeks straight, and these have set me back in my training.

I've cut my workouts to 5 times a week, following the C2 Interactive 2K Programme (http://concept2.co.uk/training/your_pro ... 55&mhr=200.

I am looking for something to do on weekends that might help me stay a little bit active, while still aiding recovery and preventing injuries. I was thinking about adding a bike ride or long walk on one day, and then a yoga routine on the other day. I'm looking for something like 20 minutes of stretching and breathing exercises for a beginner. Does anyone know any good resources for this kind of workout?

There's a lot we don't know about your physics that could explain your problems, but if you're getting worn out and injure yourself, you're training wrong!
It might be that you're not ready to follow the intensive course you're referring to. You MUST allow your body to rest and recover between training sessions, at least when you're in your initial training period or exposing yourself to new exercises. This is the most common reason why (especially young aspiring ones) athlets get injuries and perform weak: They overtrain themselves - and it can take months to recover if they have stretched the line too far.

What is your previous history on exercise and training?
How long have you been exercising on the C2?
What resistance to you normally put on the fan?
Are you in a hurry?

You are thinking very well when you look for alternative ways of exercising in the weekends: Stretching, yoga, running (initially on soft ground unless you're an experienced runner, and preferrably uphill. The BEST is if you can run XC in the forest!), XC-skiing, biking, general strengthening (start carefully!). All this will contribute to strengthening muscles, ligaments and joints, and you will also improve your rowing. But most important of all: Listen to your body, get suffficiently rest and don't necessarilly follow the specific program until you're ready for it.

About yoga, which is very good for you, menthally as well as physically, there is an URL named yogadownload.com where you can find exercises at various compexity and length - some are even for free. Or search Youtube.

Good luck :)

Be sure to take a few yoga classes or pilates classes prior to venturing out on your own. while these program can provide some lengthening and dynamic stretching there are postions that can be injurous if not done correctly. Also be sure the yoga program you select is one geared toward fitness versus the pseudo-religious overtones and meditative aspects of some yoga styles.

Another good alternative exercise for rowing is swimming, if you have access to a lap swim pool.

And another good program is the PetePlan Beginning Rowing plan or his 5K and 2K(The Pete Plan)workouts. None of these are 7 days, each one takes you through a variety of rowing workouts, at various ratings and paces. Be sure to read his comments and then re-read his comments before doing a workout. He posts on the UK site, though mostly on the PetePlan (2K). Btu read through those posts.

Rowing books cover some of the especially useful poses, front/back/side plank, boat and arch, and hip flexor stretches like warriors. The caution notes from the other posters also make sense, as in pigeon and sitting on my heels like child can aggrevate my IT bands and ligaments. Walking is also good cross training/active rest.

Ashtanga Yoga - David Swenson Short Forms DVD offers a 15 - 30 and 45 minute Yoga workout which I really like.
