Is 9 minutes a bad 2k erg time???

Post by missjuliah » March 19th, 2013, 6:15 pm

I'm a junior in high school and I've been rowing/ erging for about 4 months now (3 in the fall season, one so far for the spring season). I'm a 150 pound, 5'9" female. Even though I haven't been doing it for long, I love rowing/crew! I'm even thinking about doing it in college for a club or a Division 2 or 3 team. I'm worried about my erg time though. My current 2k is 9 minutes exactly and I don't know if that will get me into a college team. Compared to the other girls on my team, I'm about average or maybe even a little bit above average. Is 9 minutes really bad for a 2k erg time? Is rowing in college an unrealistic goal for me? I know I still have all of the spring season and all of senior year to improve, but I'm still worried

You should look at the Concept 2 rankings for your age group. Among all 13-18 age female rowers, LWt and HWt, 87 percent have better times than you. 36 pecent are under 8:00 for 2K. Perhaps you should do some research on what kind of times college women typically achieve. You have the time and size to get better.

Don't let that deter you! You've got good height and you seem passionate about the sport! Keep on erging, that is the only way you'll get faster. Plenty of SS workouts, combined with a few intervals here and there.

Check this site out - you enter your age, amount of sessions per week, resting heart rate, max heart rate (it is definitely worth investing in a heart rate monitor if you don't already have one), number of weeks until your race (for your purpose you can put 12, I think the minimum is 8 weeks), and current 2k time. It tells you the exact range of splits you should be pulling for steady state, for AT, for AN, and such.

Good luck, keep erging and don't give up! :D

Also, for reference, at my school, we're D3, and albeit not the best, but we still are working hard. Plenty of the women vary from 9:15 - 8:00 2k.

The summer will be very valuable for you. This past summer, I rowed a 1X and erged every single day (I was a bit intense, doing around 20km total erg/water time each day), but my overall fitness improved tremendously.

See if you can join a rowing club over the summer (I assume you're just on your HS's team now). Learn to scull, if you don't already know, it is a valuable skill to have!

You have to go down the rabbit hole, to see how deep it goes. Have fun!
