Hi from another Newby

Post by Parky » June 17th, 2016, 4:16 pm

Hello all! I've just joined the forums after about 10 years of casual rowing in the gym, first at work, now as an old giffer.
I've browsed the forums but not yet found anyone saying they use the "Programmed in" workouts on the PM3. Does anyone use them?
My training is varied and I've managed to get a few of the lads in DW's gym to try out the 9 x 1.40 & .20 rest wth the aim of beating 4000m in the 15minute workout. Some have got close, but none have yet managed it. There's no club near us for OTW so the gym is what we're stuck with.
My main exercise is a Pyramid, starting with a 500, .30 rest, 1000, 1.00 r, 1500, 1.30r, 2000,2.00r
1500, 1.30 r, 1000, 1.00r and finish with a 500 going like the clappers. A good intervals session of 8,000m.

Yesterdays session was done in 31.49. Todays session was a steady 2,000 in 7.48.9. At pushing 71, I feel I'm too old for this but it's good to know I can still wake up in the morning!

Enough about me for now. Cheers folks.

You're never too old!! At a mere 49 I only wish that when I get to 71 I'm half as able as you.
49, 90Kg, 175cm, RHR 50, lost 10Kg in last 6 months and hopping to loose another 5Kg in next 3.

Sounds like a good session - you may want to do a bit more variety with some long slower steady pieces staying aerobic.
I use the PM programmed sessions a bit - did the 1-4-1 pyramid tonight @1:43 and have used the others too.

There is nothing too old about 71! At the race day last Saturday in Brisbane (Australia) where I was involved the oldest competitor was 91 - did a 2:01 500 and 1Km @2:08 (his 2k is around 9:15 still). Aiming to do a Full marathon july 31. there are a few 70+ guys under 7:00 for 2 ks so lots of time to get faster.
Good luck

I'm aware of only 3 such persons since the beginning of time [feel free to correct]. 2 were college All-american rowers. One is a pedaler of a bike.

Exactly Jim - just a (very) few but it is does show that it is possible and that there is still a lot of blue sky for most of us to dream about.

My PB for the 2km was 7.30 about 2 years ago when I challenged one of the gym staff - a trainee PT -
and was thrashed by about 5 seconds at his second attempt.

I've no real intention to get down to sub 7.00 times, just to keep the ticker running. No training today, just celebrating, so out for a birthday meal and a couple of pints, but back to it tomorrow.

I like to vary my workouts so I'll be looking at a 30 or 60mins this week, but no half marathons.

Thanks for the tips and happy rowing.

Another 5k today, followed by 5mins on the Power Plate for a massage on the quads and calfs then 30 mins on the bike with a low effort and heart rate. Just trying to burn off some fat.

(I can't lengthen my stroke yet as the belly gets in the way)
