24hr erg training
24hr erg training
Hi. Am new to erg but have ultra distance sport background. Have decided to tackle 24hr row (solo), 47yrs. Lwt. Looking for advice/training plans/etc.--can't seem to find much online. Any help is very much appreciated.
Re: 24hr erg training
Thanks very much but how aren't marathon training and 24hr row very different in trianing approach?
Forgive the lack of knowledge on this end. Cheers.

Not sure. The only time I've done 100K was as a 24hr row with two other rower, doing 19'30" every hour.hmiv wrote:Thanks very much but how aren't marathon training and 24hr row very different in trianing approach?

Re: 24hr erg training
I haven't done a 24 hour row (definitely one of my goals though) but I did do a 100K row a few years ago, and really the training was pretty similar to the training for a marathon. It's the same sort of thing for running where people rarely ever do more than 20 miles or so when preparing to run a marathon, because at a certain point there is no question about whether or not you have the cardiovascular endurance to complete, it's simply a matter of pacing yourself correctly and getting the right nutrients.
So I would basically follow a marathon training plan (lots of 45-90 min steady states, with occasional intervals to keep up your strength), knock out a few marathons (not often though, even when you're used to doing distances it takes at least a week or two to recover fully after rowing for more than a couple hours at a stretch), and do lots of research into hydration, calorie consumption, etc to be sure you don't "bonk" when you do the real piece. The first time I tried the 100K I got 80K in and just ran out of energy. I managed to slug my way through a few thousand meters more but just didn't have it in me. I've heard of people weighing themselves every hour to be sure they're hydrating properly, or getting all their calories through liquids so that they don't screw with their digestive systems too much... it's up to you how you do it, but you will need to take in liquids, calories, and salts during the 24 hours.
