Training Help for a relatively new rower

Ok so here is the deal...I recently stumbled across the exciting world of rowing and ergs. I competed in this years Southern Sprints Indoor Rowing Championships (in Melbourne, FL) because my coach said that I needed to see how some of the better rowers compete on ergs. I went to the competition, entered as a collegiate novice (would've been lightweight, but was 10lbs off). Anyways, for the first time on an erg, I pulled a 7:38.8 with a SPM around 31 and roughly a 1:54 split I believe. Anyways..that was in February. I have not done any training on an erg since then, but I have been rowing for my college, in the pair and mens 4 daily. So I jump on the erg last night with a friend because he challenged me, and for some unknown reason...I wasn't getting tired at a 1:49 pace...needless to say i did a few power tens at the 500,1K, and 1500m marks and an all out sprint with 200 left. Finished with a 7:16.7. Now my question for all the veterans on the board...I cut 20 seconds off my erg time without any erg training...do I stand to cut more off if I train on the erg...if so what could I do to help bring my time below a 7:00 mark for example...thanks for the help
