Crossfit Workout: deadlifts followed by C2 intervals

I've done deadlifts and I've done rowing intervals, but never during the same session. I always thought that doing both would put too much stress on the back.

Today at Crossfit we did several sets of deadlifts, working our way up to maximal lifts. The sets were followed by 8 x 250m intervals on the C2 with a 60 sec rest in between. I didn't find that by back was adversely affected but I will say that it was much harder to maintain a good pace on those intervals, since many of the rowing muscles were pre-exhausted by the deadlifts.

Has anyone else done a similar workout? Any thoughts? Pros and cons of this type of workout?

I always do my interval sessions after Deadlift, I may suffer slightly on the pace I can hold for the intervals, but it allows me to have a rest day that would otherwise be taken up by intervals - which would be detrimental to DL gains.

I'm a competitive powerlifter and Olympic weightlifter who uses the C2 for sanity, gp, work capacity and recreation. Also a former CFer.

I wouldn't do that workout. Too much risk if you're deadlifting heavily. It kind of reminds me of the old bodybuilding mindset of pre-fatiguing muscles followed with forced reps.

You may not have hurt yourself this time, or ever, but IMHO, the risk-reward ratio doesn't favor this workout. Of course, CF is not really well-known for having a good sense of when risks outweigh rewards.

Even CFE, which specializes in the shallow end of the risk:reward pool, generally recommends 3+ hours separation between their strength WOD and their EWOD.

Just out of curiousity, which CF box, and what were your DLs?

CF box? What's that?

My DL max was 295 lbs x 2 reps. Wasn't able to break 300, although I've maxed out before about 335 lbs (back when I was doing a lot of lifting)

The 250m intervals were pacing in the low 1:40's to high 1:30's.

PS: although my back didn't bother me during the workout, it felt very sore this AM, and I feel very stiff. I'll have to do a lot of stretching today.
