Injury to buttocks?

I was rowing normally the other day and felt some discomfort in my left buttock. I didn't think much of it but the following day (getting out of bed) the pain was intense, deep in the center. It built for a couple days to the point I couldn't really walk. Sitting or standing was OK, but transitioning from one to the other was incredibly painful. Then it faded over a few days. I think it was a pulled muscle, but a web search suggested it might be some kind of bursitis. Anyone out there have a similar experience or some perspective?

Probably just over use. I find that when I start up in the fall, my buttocks muscles are out of shape and that they hurt after rowing. Not the physical rubbing on the seat, but the muscle soreness from working out. I did my first real long row (31,000 m) a week or so ago and I was just like you describe.

Cyclist2, thanks for your reply. Wow, 31k in one session? You deserve to be sore after that - by my math that's over 2 hours of rowing. I think my head would explode after that, let alone my butt! I think my injury was more than the typical muscle soreness after a big increase in working out. I rowed for 10 minutes on Monday just to stretch things out and the next day (yesterday) I felt the injury lurking. I will try to row again tomorrow and see how it goes.

Possibly Sciatica. Do a search and see if could be, if so, try the reccommended streches and see if it helps.
