Another step closer to the ultimate goal of 100k, and a PB by five minutes and five seconds.
Another absolute stunner Stu - well done indeed. Totally beyond my ken how you can just sit there going up an down for so long let alone with a handle in your hands. And you want to do it twice over....

Haha, thanks Mike. I can't explain it either, but it's my only chance of a British record in anything, so I'm going to give it as good a go as I possibly can.

I do think you've got a serious chance of getting it too. I've never known anyone so singularly focused on any aspect of a sport - day in, day out, you put the metres in, knocking off HMs like they're warmups B)

Great work on the 50k btw

Thanks mate. I do seem to have found a groove, and I'm making full use of my newly found spare time. I can't explain why, but I think of a HM as a fairly short distance now, and I only did 18k this morning as I didn't have the time to do any longer.

I'm really happy with the first 50k, it's just the second half that will be the moment I'll need to step up and suck it up. This time around I'm not taking anything for granted, or doing things the same way as I've done them before.

I found 100k a whole different challenge to FM, but couldn't really give it my all as I had serious intestinal issues due to not having acclimatised to the strength of drink I was using. Do you intend to do any longer rows in the build up (eg I have seen 10 x 10k as a suggested preparation)? Any thoughts how much slower than 50k you intend to start at?

I'm with you on HM. While I was off I was doing 25k as my standard LSDs. When I did a serious HM I had no lute pain and very little muscular pain in my legs despite this being my only PB for 9 years. Somehow I doubt that that will carry on for 100k 'though. I will let you try that one as my distance has had to drop to allow time for work and I don't think taking a whole day out would go down well with my other half. So will settle for the 50km mentioned above.

Hope the prep'n goes well, you certainly deserve a BR!

Max, L4 stuff on the skierg should in my view be not like on the rower, but much higher rated. And in general I would use much more free rate. For the rest I do think, just like rowing, that volume is king, but you need to be fast enough. Long very easy work is not taxing the aerobic system enough.
Thanks Henry,
I use 1.5 times the wp rates and that seems to make sense (as well as making all the pieces easy to calculate).

But yeah, I think because the prime movers are smaller muscles and the legs are mainly used on the recovery, it's just not as hard on the cv system.
Given that your current rating is to low, that 1.5 is also to low. I think you should slowly up the ratings, if possible. Ofcourse longer, base sessions, should never become racing. So you need to take time.
Thanks as always Henry,
I'll try a few things out.

Smashed my 2K PB today - closing in on sub-7!
Image

My previous "official" 2K was 7:26.9, which I did back in May 2020 about a month after I started using my C2 as my primary workout method. More than 1.6 million meters later, earlier this month I did a 2K in 7:19.3 as part of the Cross-Team Challenge, but it didn't really count because it was the first of three 2K pieces done back-to-back for this month's challenge. I was really happy with that, but knew I'd have more in the tank for a single 2K piece. Meanwhile, the Indoor Rowers League set a 2K challenge for the February piece, and I decided today was the day. I blew myself away with my 7:07.

I never really thought I'd be saying this, but now I'm thinking a sub-7-minute 2K isn't out of the realm of possibility!
Massive improvement - keep it going!

Thanks Iain. I'm not doing any longer distance now. In 2017 when I did my 12hr challenge I did 65k, 75k, 85k sessions leading up to the 100k and I honestly think all they did was undermine my performance and potential.

I know roughly what it feels like, and how tough the discomfort will be, albeit I'm going to be going faster with less breaks so it will be harder but I'm coping a lot better with the discomfort too. I also need to be careful that I don't injure my lower back in preparation, as it is a little aggravated atm.

I'm probably going to aim for 1:59 pace for as long as possible, as 1:58 wasn't too fast, and I wasn't at all rested last week after doing two fairly hard sessions on Wednesday and Thursday before Friday's 50k. My plan is to then ease off a little bit after 60-65k and maybe allow for a couple of pit stops to stretch etc.

Failed to beat my 2km PB last time I tried a couple of weeks ago, almost HD that day, limping home about 10 seconds off a PB. Today was different though. I dug deep and knocked 0.4 off last Septembers time
