BPP 18.4 10k (restricted to 20 SPM for 5k)

Image

I decided to go strapless so that I really concentrated on form. At 5k, I decided to keep it restricted for the entire 10k and try to break 43:40 (2:11 avg pace). Going to get a 90' deep tissue massage now! Already looking ahead to BPP 19.1 10k TT, and I'll be targeting 41:30.

This is my first post here, hopefully, there will be many more to come. I am 18 years old, 6'3" 185 lbs and I am starting out on the BPP. I have been rowing for a few weeks now (only about 8 sessions) and am ready to take it seriously. In previous years I have competed in triathlons competitively, although, I took the winter off to lift and my endurance is abysmal. My goal is to be in good enough shape to walk on to my college's rowing team (obviously in the novice boat).

Anyways, I did Week 1.1 today. I fixed my form and tried to remain conscientious of it throughout the row. I definitely went way too hard as can be seen by my heart rate. Though, on the bright side, I set a 5k PB by 2 minutes as well as a 2k PB in the last 2k of the 5k. I really struggle with going easy on the SS and would appreciate some advice. Should I try to just row 20 SPM, or force myself to keep my HR under 165? Any help is appreciated.

Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M HR

Welcome and congrats on the PB! My HR runs high, so I don't wear the monitor if I'm pushing hard. I also struggle not doing a TT when doing a SS. 2 items have really helped me 1) row using a restricted SPM as you mention, and 2) rowing without straps on

Today I did both. Sometimes I'll do a graduated restricted piece. For example, I might do a 5k by splitting it up into 1k pieces mentally restricting the 1st to 18 SPM, 2nd to 19 SPM.... and 5th to 22 SPM. I know others on this board to HR restricted rows. I'll be interested to see what others suggest as I'm still new myself.

Early gains. Racing your training is fine, this will sort itself out, soon enough you can,t race every session anymore.

Make your number one goal, building your stroke strong, you are young and tall. The best place to be. Row your non racing training  at rate 18/22.
2 build volume in your training, the more meters the better. But don,t row junk meters, make every stroke a good stroke.

Re hf, even 165 is high. Ss is a lot slower. Think 2k pace plus 20 seconds.

Enjoy and good luck.

Welcome to this thread and the forum, great place to learn from many experienced rowers as I have and still learning. I'm very new to the sport after a very long lay off (over 10 years) from when I did a fair bit of rowing and the big difference I find now compared to then is my SPM - it is way lower. I too am doing the BPP (5.1 yesterday) and I never thought I'd do 7000 at 22 SPM and keep a decent pace and feel comfortable. I really think my stroke is improving and getting stronger with each week that goes by.

Good Day,
Welcome @tmonahan - I find one of the best ways to focus on the SS rowing is to make it really long. Think 90+ minutes. You will go out too fast, most likely, and struggle towards the end. However, then you will have a SS /500 meter time to use as your average. I would suggest using that /500 meter time and just rowing at that speed and work on controlling your HR during the row. Are you active outside of rowing currently? If the goal is to build the heart muscle to get it ready for sprints etc, that can be done with any type of workout in that HR zone. But, rowing works better for rowing. Also, I am not an expert. HAHA.

Cycle 1/ Week 3/ Day 1
4x1000 5R with spm >30

05/29/18
1000 149
1000 149
1000 149
1000 143.9

Avg 147.7

Least favorite workout, but most spot on for what a 2k TT would be, so lots of work to do....

Have a great day.

BPP 18.5
4x1000m 3r
Target 1:55.7 for 1st 3, all out on 4th

1) 3:51.2, 1:55.6, 29spm
2) 3:51.1, 1:55.5, 26spm (purposely tried to "save energy")
3) 3:50.8, 1:55.4, 28spm
4) 3:48.9, 1:54.4, 29spm

Final interval was a b!tch.

@rayofsunshine: Doesn't that hurt? I hate that distance, seems like the middle 500 is the most ridiculous thing. Really well done, you did them on 3R, I had 5R, big difference there. Nice work.....

I agree. It's that middle 500.... more specifically about 700-200m to go really gets me mentally. I am getting better with mental games, but it's hard to keep up when my body is telling a different story.

Only distance that's worse for me is the 1500. The 5x1500 3r destroys me.

BPP 5.2 for me tonight so a short one (I was going to do 3 or 4k cool down) as i wanted to check out a new gym that had a skierg that I could try for the first time!

800m 3:26.0 2:08.7 24 SPM
800m 3:24.8 2:08.0 25 SPM
800m 3:24.4 2:07.7 26 SPM
800m 3:24.0 2:07.5 25 SPM

Slight improvement with each set but I feel i should have set the pace boat at 2:06 for the final one, annoyed with myself for not doing that.

Good Day,
@ray - Awesome job!! I think with just constant pacing you have more room to grow immediately also. Very well done. That 2:05 split towards the end looks like it hurt.

Cycle 1/ Week 3/ Day 2
12k SS @23spm and HR <145. Avg. 2:06.4

This was a large increase in recovery meters, but my body wanted in. Went for a 10 mile bike ride yesterday and forgot about the butt pain of getting back on the bike, so a bit sore there today. I was impressed with HR for the first 7500 of this as it was sitting at 138. Glad to see some progress there, hopefully it will translate to sprints in a few months.

Have a great day

It was painful. I had set a new goal of 41:10 with about 6k left. With a little under 2500m to go, I was struggling and gave up on the new goal so that I wouldn't HD. I figured I could still get the 41:30. Then, I felt like I was going to miss that because the wheels were falling off. Somewhere inside 800m I completely emptied the tank. The last 10 strokes or so were pathetic.. I think they were up near 2:08. I couldn't breath, was dizzy, yada, yada.

If it wasn't for reading some of the other posts out on the boards, I wouldn't have finished emptying the tank. So, I felt like I needed to share the above in case it motivates just 1 person to not give up.

David, your aerobic conditioning is awesome. I envy you. I need to improve there more than anything, so I really just need to keep putting in the meters. I will be wearing my HRM on my SS pieces.
