I don't know why, but I had an urge to do an FM. I expected a 2:48 result, at best, given my recent sessions, a bad night's sleep, and a 4/10 HRV. Some days just don't follow the rule book, and I think this is a 1 minute 42 second PB.

Annoyingly I didn't have any wobbles, so I could have gone faster. I really expected it to get messy with circa 7k to go, but it just didn't happen. I didn't even want to stop, and a 2:43 is in my sights with some more normal preparation.

Very happy with this, but that won't last for long. I have far too restless satisfaction, and I'm trying to grab what I can whilst I'm still improving.
Commented on this on FB but had to say again what an amazing and inspiring row...and you can do even better! I love that you aren't satisfied for long, I do the same but I think it's a good trait for Erging.

24 second PB in the end and no real hiccups. Enjoying this vein of form whilst it lasts. The overall average is also better than my current 5km PB so that will need to be addressed next.

Thanks mate. My ultimate goal is still the 100k, and I'm now wondering if the British record is possible (6:51.51). It's my only chance of getting a record so I might as well give it a go. My current 100k PB was about as badly prepared as it is possible to do, so I know that knocking off 50 mins shouldn't be too difficult.

The satisfaction always gets twitchy as I start thinking; if I can do that pace, then surely I can squeeze out a bit more. I can always identify moments of weakness, even if they are quite short

Having a look at your recent training results I would guess that you are capable of a 100km time in the 6:45 - 7:05 range - you certainly appear to have the right mindset and the miles in your legs to have a good go at the record - just a word of caution : don't leave your best efforts on the training ground - you are doing a really high volume of training at the moment at what appears to be a reasonably high intensity.
Best of luck for when you get round to it - I think you have a good shot at it(Does the current record belong to Graeme Todd?)

Male 40-49 Hwt Grahame Todd 2007 6:51:51.0
Interestingly enough the 40-49 LWT British record 100k by Keith Darby is quicker. I guess this might have something to do with him having to move less body mass up and down the slide?

Quite possible. There is very little difference in the HWT and LWT records for the long distance stuff in most of the age groups.

I remember meeting Grahame when he came to support us when we were doing a 24-hr row.
We had a spare erg and supporters were coming along and doing hour sessions alongside us.
Grahame did 2 sessions I think - about 15000m @ R20 or thereabout for each one and making it look very easy   .
Very good rower and a really nice guy to boot- not massive ( about 6ft and 85ish kgs) but very strong.

Thanks Paul. Grahame is a Team Oarsome team mate so I've got a bit of added incentive! He is still smashing out ridiculous metres: he did 771k for the Holiday Challenge.

I'm going through that exact thought process right now: am I just procrastinating or do I still need to get prepared? I need to ease off a little bit atm, as I think I'm pushing it slightly too hard, but I've always liked the idea of making training hard, so the event isn't as much of a shock. I tried to do a 100k last May and it all fell apart at about 48k, but I'm in a far better place this time round, and I've learnt a lot more since then.

Keith Darby is a force of nature, and manages to smash out amazing results at all distances.

I've always toyed with the idea of a 24hr challenge, but I don't think I've got the courage to endure that kind of discomfort. Maybe I will, but I probably won't 😅

Continuing to mine the "Tour de SkiErg" newby gains seam.

2k PB.

7:43.8 2,000m 1:55.9 225 1072 40

1:56.8 500m 1:56.8 220 1055 37

1:53.6 2,000m 1:53.6 239 1121 44

Looks like I knew what I was doing! Tough and had to spend some time lying down after, but I didn't have that all-consuming vomit-inducing muscle-burning lactate accumulation. Probably could have gone a bit quicker, then.

Had half an eye on trying to be within a minute of Henry's amazing time, but didn't quite make that. Comparisons are the thief of joy and all that, but this is by a country mile my best SkiErg effort.

Nice one Max and indeed a good bit better than your 5k, so you are rapidly improving, and so you should  Over time you will be able to rate higher.
I have the same as you, I look at others, and think how the hell can they be so much faster :D

Well done Max, nice gains.

Who do you think is mostly likely to win TDS with out knowing Clapp’s 2k submission?

Think Freddy Sm. Don’t expect Clapp to break the 2k Wr and on the 10k I also don’t expect a big gap.
