Who knew that hard work pays off?!?! PB by 1 min 38 seconds!!!! This is possibly my proudest PB, as I was only hoping for getting 1:18.00, and in my wildest dreams I was hoping for 1:17.30.

Eyes closed for the vast majority of it, so I didn't let my preconceived ideas slow me down, and I took inspiration from Jo Andre and set off aggressively and hoped for the best.

I only started to wobble with 3k to go, but there were a few very major wobbles.
Impressive Stu. I’d trade this for my 1’ PB any day of the week. Well done!

To misquote the golfers (was it Palmer it was it Player?). The harder you’ve trained the luckier you’ve got. And this is a very ‘lucky’ HM.

Wowski, like mentioned on IG Stu, this is just insane! You just take a leap over 1:17, and go well into 1:16  Loads of volume lately have probably helped out a lot. I think this is stronger than both a 8500 30 min and a 16500 60 min?

Seems like you had that same next-to-last-split wobble like me, where your mind goes "can this be held??"

No more of this "I have given up keeping up with you" now Stu, you are a real contender for a future sub 1:15 HM :)

*Mindblown*
thanks mate. Sub 1:15 is crazy talk!! Sub 1:16 is going to be a massive effort. I have just realised I set a new unofficial 60 mins PB too (it looked like 16,481m, as I was wondering what I could get).

I definitely had that huge wobble, and almost talked myself into a HD.

Congrats, you exactly matched my pb, only difference is rating, I rated 24 ish. Think I was a few years younger though, so yours is better :D
Thanks Henry. At r24 that is a very strong result.

We all could see how much you improved you already great fitness in the last months, but this is insane! I'm very happy for you and share your opinion: your proudest PB! Great to see when all the hard works pays off.
But you know: now your other PBs look a bit soft, you'll have to fix that
Hahaha thanks mate. It was beyond my wildest dreams, as I thought 1:18.25 was a really tough session, so to take off that much is mind boggling to me also.

I know I need to look at all of my other PBs now. My 60 mins 16,500m target doesn't seem so tough now.

Thanks Nick. I've no idea how you have gone over two minutes faster, in your late forties.

Outstanding Stu,

I did wonder if you'd be giving this a crack soon and I'm not the slightest bit surprised that you've set such a stonking PB. Awesome work.

The only problem is that you'll have to attend to the 10k and others now too, even if they are sprint distances for you.
Hahaha, yeah all of my PBs look a bit soft now!! It's our Team Oarsome monthly challenge, as nominated by me, so I had to see what was possible.

Blimey O'Reilly .....that is a monumental effort and a fantastic PB.....big congrats Stu!!!

What's next?
Hahaha, thanks Alex. What's next? Probably the 60 mins, or the 10k, as that seems quite a short distance now.

If we calculate 1,5 split difference between a 60 min effort and a HM effort, you might well be able to go 16700+ by now :D

Holy %$#@ Stu! I knew you had a HM PB in you but never expected this kind of result. I would be happy to go sub 1:19 let alone sub 1:17. An average pace under 1:50 and almost under 1:49. I am so happy for you and its a a testament to your work. We all have a row or two that makes us proud, I can see how this one is yours. I am truly amazed!!

Hahaha, thanks mate. I didn't expect it either!! With hindsight I have done PBs and felt like they were really tough, but in reality I have slightly limited my pace as I was convincing myself it was too fast.

I risked a massive crash and burn, but I had to see what was possible. It took all of my coping advice to keep me going near the end, despite it looking like I was still full of energy.

I had a go at my first 60 minute row this evening. It's the first time I've been past 10k or 38 minutes. All things considered, it went very well.

All I planned to do was 16k, so a 1:52.5/500m split time. I went off the blocks slightly faster than that, committed myself to a modest neg split throughout the row and then went fast and steady (as opposed to slow and steady) on the final 10 minutes.

What's nice is that there was no temptation to HD at any point, and even the final 10 minutes felt easy enough. I've included a photo of the final readout to show the terminal velocity.
