Okay, here you go.

Put a couple of weight plates on the floor, touching the wall, and butt the erg feet up against those plates. This will keep you from advancing toward the wall. (I use a single piece of 2x2 in line with the Erg Rail to accomplish this at home)

Now take a couple more weight plates and set them so that they hold the feet down on either side, it shouldn't take too much to stop the lifting. Anyway, think of it this way. Even if the erg doesn't lift, unless you solve the problem internally, you are still doing the "wastefull" action it is just being masked through the application of other forces. (Much like the Slides can add nothing to your strength, but can mask the consequences of a rushed recovery.)

Bob,

The only thing that raising the footboards does is shorten the compression and reach, or cause us to get into very weak biomechanical positions to get full reach. I've never found that having the heels lower is a hinderance to applying high force to the handle, though it does take considerable core strength to maintain connection and translate the force horizontally.
Erg on,

You produce more power than me, so my solution may not work for you, but I have athletic tape, with the sticky side out wrapped around the feet of my erg to keep it from sliding. You might be able to combine this with the 20 lbs weights to prevent motion.

PaulS' idea seems cleaner, admittedly.

As I understand it, ergs must be unmodified for records and racing. I don't think I would try bolting it to the floor without some ruling from C2 first.

Here is more information on Leo Young's times.

Hi Chad, you may want to contact a guy by the name of Bob Bridge, he is responsible for maintaining the world short course sprint records. These are supposedly the official world records done under true erow race conditions. Some of the records may seem a little bit soft but this is because no-one has bothered compiling sprint record distances until recently. The records will obviously improve over time.
His email is MANZIR@xtra.co.nz. Website you can obtain the records at is NZIRA.org.
PS, Every comp I have been to the ergs have been held down by someone standing on the front of them, especially over the sprint distances. Any legitimet time over 500m of sub 1:15 is world class. I have heard of a guy by the name of Andy Sheridan (pro English Rugby player) doing around a 1:13.5 for 500m, completely unsudstantiated though. He is a very big unit though, 6"5, 120kgs and has a bench press of 300kgs!!!
If you can go under 1:13 that is truely remarkable. Cheers Todd.

PM1 vs. PM2...again

Post by rlholtz » May 13th, 2007, 2:12 pm

Hope this doesn't rile anyone up too much but...

Rowed 8 x 500 on my B with PM1 today. Average time was 1:44.3.

Plugged watts from this session into calculator proffered earlier. Average time...1:44.4.
