That's a great improvement and you haven't been doing many intense rows - this is a good indication the extra meters improved fitness.winniewinser wrote: ↑September 26th, 2020, 6:42 am5km PB -13s
Opened up the engine this morning for a hard 5km. I had intended for this to be a sighter to gauge where I am but it felt good so I carried on and was over the moon to knock 13s off my old PB . The last of my old HWT PBs to fall.
It did highlight how breaking 18' is going to be very hard but it's a good target to have.

That's a great results Martin!! Crushed it! You definitely had some in the tank with that finish, 17:45 will be good target next.MartinSH4321 wrote: ↑September 27th, 2020, 4:13 amCongrats to all recent 5k PBs!
Did one myself today
5k - 17:53.1 - -5,5''
After my 10k PB last week I was pretty sure to get another PB today, but as I have hardly done any interval training at 5k pace lately I started conservatively to see how I feel - it was not an as good day as the 10k PB day, but pretty good, had a good bit left in the tank at 1k to go and nicely paced up. No thoughts about HD during the whole effort so I'm sure I can be a good bit faster, maybe close to 17:45 on a very good day.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
2 PBs in less than a day.....5K @ 17:23.7, 1K @ 2:59.4
Did both as part of the Devon Indoor Rowing Championship...took 2nd in both for my age group. A new guys from GB (Stuart Moss) just moved into my age group and beat me. He was one of the best in the lower age group so not shocking he won both - at least it was close in the 1K. I just think guys named Stu like to beat my times in the longer rows.
So, apologize if post is long but have to tell the story how I screwed this up but ended with good results. I planned to do 1K Saturday and 5K early Sunday (due to different time zone I had to be done before 7:00 AM, so on rower by 6:00 AM). Sleep decent Friday, feel confident as I get on the rower Saturday for the 1K but...as I am warming up I am not feeling too strong and doing burst at race pace I feel like I am working way too hard. Shrug it off and continue with warmup. Get all set, program monitor to 1K and off we go. Do my hard pulls to start and settle into a pace 1 split above goal and I realize I feel like the pace is just so hard......I stop 400M in, yes I did an HD As soon as I did I realized this was really bad as I just wasted energy and still have to do 2 TTs in the next 18 hrs. So, I decided to treat the extra 400m as a warmup for a 5K TT. Walked around and gathered myself some, tried to get my mind right and get HR down. I did and then did the 5K. My plan was the normal harder pulls to get going then sit on a 1:44/1:45 pace the whole way until the end and see if I could go quicker. As you will see below I followed the plan exactly and was shocked I was able to get toward the end with no wobble. The only thing that didn't happen was I couldn't muster up much of a sprint. Actually fell off pace from 500-300 to go before a small decrease in time for last 300. Maybe this is where the extra 400m hurt me? Anyway, it was a PB and I will take it.
The 1K - I got up at 5AM, ate a little, stretched and started to get ready. I am feeling tired, sore and not confident at all. Warmup and start feeling better, actually better than I thought I would. I tell myself to do the hard pulls to start but get settled quick.....and I don't do it! Pull way too hard in first 100, then don't settle enough in second 100, so first 200m way faster than planned. However, I do the 200--400 slower than original plan and sort of gather myself. Started too feel tired and get the burn but I realize if I can just hold 1:30/1:31 I can break 3:00 and maybe PB. Sit on that till 200m to go and then think I can sprint, I lower than pace for a bout 5 strokes and then it goes back, then the last 100m I am holding on for dear life with all I have to not fade too much, completely crushed when over but get the score. I am still feeling it today with a bit of a cough and general feeling of exhaustion.

This is outstanding Keith. TBH I didn't think that you could beat your 1k as you lift much less often now. But you showed me Clearly not a great prep mentally with the HD, but I think I've seen a piece from Mike Caviston where he had his athletes do a 500m at 2k pace in the morning before a 2k race, so there's probably some benefit there.
Amazing work, really very well done.

Not spying (honest!) but did look at your log over the weekend to see how you were doing and official results when they came in earlier today.
2 PBs and 2 Silver medals is a very good weekends work ..despite having to get the results in by 12pm Sunday UK time (which was a bit unfair if you ask me on participants from other countries!). The first 200m on the 1k was monstrous but I think the pace overall turned out pretty well - from what pro rowers say - you should be dying off in the last few strokes and not still pulling hard else had some left.
Put your feet up and enjoy the plaudits

Hahahahahaha, I'm coming for you big man...it won't be soon, but I'm aiming at this 5k. Downside is, if I beat it, you'll be fired up and probably regain it again soon enough.
Very happy for you mate, two PBs in these circumstances take a massive amount of effort. Your 1k PB is particularly impressive, as you've showing signs of a 5k PB for a while now, but your sub three 1k is a massive result

I definitely didn't think I could beat my 1K. My strength and weight are both down some and my recent shorter rows have been off and doing it the day after the 5K early in the morning....think I got lucky my body responded. In general, I think my 1K pace now requires more effort but I am able to maintain that effort longer. I am sure my 500M would be a couple seconds off right now.max_ratcliffe wrote: ↑September 28th, 2020, 9:01 am^^^^^^^^

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Just make sure to add a sub 1:30 pace 400m to your 5K warmup I have no doubt you will beat my 5K as I still think I can do better there. I plan to move onto focusing more on 2K but may have another crack at the 5K at some point.Dangerscouse wrote: ↑September 28th, 2020, 9:15 amHahahahahaha, I'm coming for you big man...it won't be soon, but I'm aiming at this 5k.
The 1K was a surprise as last couple I have been about a second higher and under the circumstances didn't think I could get it. That said I don't think I have too much more there until I start doing more interval work.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Hi,
not sure if this is the best place to start, but I joined a gym last month, mainly to use weight (I'm 155kg (341 lbs) at 200cm (6'6'')), and I have been using the rowing machine there since then. It's my favorite exercise for sure. I've been mainly doing 2k and 5k. And I've been improving my time consistently since then. I haven't gotten any instruction and just looked at a few videos, so my form is probably pretty bad. But I was thinking I'd like to share my times and maybe seek out some community to push myself a bit more.
I'll just go ahead and post my personal bests since joining the gym on the 14th of August
(Date - Time)

16.08 - 8:25

Feedback and suggestions would also be appreciated, both in regards to indoor rowing and about the where to look for on the forum.

I am very happy with results but agree that timing was a bit tough, I sent an email and asked if it had to be UK time and they said yeas and then updated the website with that. The first 200m on 1K was too quick but I did sort of settle down and gain back some energy in the 200-400. I am always devastated after a 1K or 2K but this was extra bad, my body was freezing up, another stroke or two and I would have been pulling 1:40s or more. Going to have an easier training week this week, then start focusing on 2K work.
