With many doing the BRVC I thought it was a good opportunity to have a go at this distance. Plan was 5 fast pulls to start and then settle into 1.39’s for the remainder with a push at the end. All went to plan and perhaps if i had projected time on the monitor I might have pushed a bit harder to go sub 6.30. I decided to not display it as i did want to get carried away too early. But might change that for next time

Nice work Ian. Apart from the whole fitness thing, your mental stamina must be really on point to keep pushing yourself for all these TTs.

I wanted to post a bad day, since I usually post the good. I did 7:41 7 weeks ago at a drag factor of 110, where I fell apart in the last 500m. Lungs were okay, but arms and legs couldn't hang on. This time, the target was sub 7:20 at the BRVC which I thought I was 95% to get. On Monday, I did a 4 minute piece at 1:48.9 where my ending HR was 184 (max is over 200 while running, 191 while rowing). It felt comfortable.

Today, my race was at 11:40 and I always exercise before breakfast. I had a big breakfast and then did the Eddie Fletcher warm up (which I also did on Monday). It felt REALLY hard today though and I was worried. It was hotter than usual and I started worrying that I tapered too much. Anyway, sub 1:50 or bust. So the race began and I did everything I could to keep it sub 1:50. First 500m were fine, but my HR was already at 182 which was worrying. It was at 174 after 500m of the 4 minute piece. With 500m to go, I just fell apart and couldn't hang on. My legs were burning and again like the last 2k I felt my legs give away rather than my lungs.

After the race, I felt dizzy and nearly fainted and felt like throwing up. It took me 30 minutes to get back to normal. I've done intense 100% effort pieces before and this is not normal for me. If I had to guess what happened today, I would guess the big breakfast and the heat played its part.

I used a drag factor of 125 today (used 130 for the 4 minute piece). It might have just been a bad day. 18 second PB though. I have no doubt that if I had just done my 2k on Monday, I would have gone at least 7:18.

Rested up for a few days and retested my 5k. Followed Stu's advice and went out a bit faster and tried to hold on to it. Felt really good and delighted to join the sub 18 club. The last kilometre was really tough but I am so happy. If I never go faster than this again I can live with it.

Hey guys,
I've done two 2k time trials before, but I had never taken a shot at a 1k. Did my first 1k time trial on the erg today, and I was really happy with the result.

Time Meters Pace S/M
3:09.3 1,000m 1:34.6 33
:47.7 250m 1:35.4 34
:47.2 500m 1:34.4 33
:47.8 750m 1:35.6 33
:46.5 1,000m 1:33.0 32

This also gives me the confidence with the doubling the distance +5 seconds/500m rule, that I could potentially crack 6:40 on a 2k soon (as +5 would put me at 1:39.6/500m or a 6:38-6:39). This would be a great PB for me given that my previous best was 6:49 (a little over a month ago). I'm most likely going to do that 2k next weekend, so I'm very excited!

I’ve no idea how to multi quote so I’ll say thanks to everyone. I guess I’m just picking off low hanging fruit at the moment with technique and fitness improvements but I know full well that will taper off sooner rather than later :)

Very nice 1k, and for a first go, pretty outstanding.

Are you new to rowing, then? I look forward to seeing lots more PBs as you gain experience and especially if you're still growing.

Hey guys,
I've done two 2k time trials before, but I had never taken a shot at a 1k. Did my first 1k time trial on the erg today, and I was really happy with the result.

Yes, I started rowing in March of this year, so I’m pretty new to the rowing world. I appreciate the kind words, I’m excited to keep progressing and gaining experience as well.

Thought I’d try my luck with 5km again today. After yesterdays 2km I convinced myself that 5km at a considerably slower than 2km pace should feel ok.
Target was 1.44 and a fast start to get under average, focussing on keeping rate high.

Last time splits 3 and 4 were my slowest by quite a bit so I really wanted to hold pace through that section and I knew If I could then the result was there for the taking.

3:26.7 5,000m 1:43.3 317 1391 34

I think that’s it now for time trials for a few weeks. Work is going to be mental for quite a bit so I’ll just work on building my base

That 5k is not lucky Ian - well done for all the hard work. It is a really good strategy to step back and change up and down - periods of base building pay dividends in the long run.
