A rash decision as it turns out. I had hastily sketched out a plan this morning to have a go at 50k during the challenge window having previously given up on the idea of a FM due to lack of training. I know.. I know... I thought 3h45 might be doable. First 15k went OK, but then felt a bit rough and had to make a toilet stop which cost me two mins but was still ahead of schedule. 35k was still going OK and on target for 3h44 and then the wheels fell off big time and the last 10k was a horror show losing over 4 mins. At the end it was "bucket gaston" time. I should have called it a day at 35k but carried on out of stupidity and stubbornness and rowed myself into the ground to finish, various body parts rebelling and generally feeling like ****. Four hours later only just felt well enough to return to the scene of the crime and plug in my USB to copy off the row and upload to the logbook.
This one could go straight into 'Cautionary Tales for Children by Hilaire Belloc'. 50k is not to be taken lightly!!!! Still its done, pain fades and can chalked up as PB of sorts. At least it gives me something to aim at sometime way way in the distant future (3 hours ago the erg was going on eBay!!! )
Great write-up of what sounds like a rather unpleasant experience. "... given up on the idea of a FM due to lack of training", yet you go ahead with a 50k!
This is a still a great achievement, despite (or perhaps because of) the discomfort you felt during the last 10k.

Love the write up and the sheer determination to keep going, just like Mitchel did the other day too. This takes a massive amount of mental fortitude to keep going and it's just as laudable as a faster time, at a slightly less intensity, because the pain and stress is a lot harder to deal with when you're struggling so much with 10k to go and there's nothing but pride dragging you onwards.Dino wrote: ↑May 11th, 2020, 8:10 pmSometime later....

I do know what you mean about a 50k compared to an FM as I have thought the same way. I think it's because there's subtly less pressure for 50k as it's not ranked and you can aim at a more conservative pace as you're going a further distance.

Impressive long distances Guys. Never seen the forum do so much extreme distance work.
With one exception, a guy whi rowed to collect money. Took his erg on the go to centres and stuff. Erged really easy, but made giant meters that way.

OHW YEAH BABY! I did my first ever half marathon TT today. After my 60min benchmark workout last week (which was a PB) @ 1:54.1 avg pace, I decided I would start at a pace in the low 1:55's and hold it there for the 40% of the race. Depending on how it would feel I could drop the pace a bit or keep it there. I decided to drop the pace just a little bit to 1:55.7 and 1:55.8 for the next two sections. From experience I know I ussually keep to much in the tank for the last k so i decided to up the pace with 4k to and drop the pace to about 1:53. With the last 2k in sight I saw my projected finish was hoovering around the 1:21:00 mark and I upped the pace again. Last K was sub 1:50.
Since it was my first HM TT it is aumatically a PB: 1:20:45 (1:54.8/500m).

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Wow, great work rtbrouwer! Seems like you had a good game planrtbrouwer wrote: ↑May 12th, 2020, 6:03 amOHW YEAH BABY!

I'm gonna enjoy this one the rest of the week

TBH it was only posting on here that kept me going! I was constructing the post in my head to take my mind off things glad you enjoyed it
There has been some amazing long distance times on here from HM to 100k in the past couple of weeks - I didn't want to miss out on all the fun!
I must prepare properly next time! I didn't even have any staples such as bananas or Electrolyte left in the cupboard plus would have been better doing in the morning rather than the evening after a full on day at work.
Although I had covered just over 600k in March and April I was playing catch up for a poor Jan and Feb... it just wasn't enough / junk meters / no real plan to it. I was way off 3hr FM form. Any niggles get magnified hugely so the small groin pain, various knee shoulder and elbow issues all just got steadily worse whereas I can normally just ignore them.
Stu - yes agree less pressure on the 50k although I kept thinking "if I was doing an FM it would only be xxxx m left to do!"
Doubling it to 100k is a massive step and completely different ballgame to the FM - I have even more respect now for the 100k'ers.
Having a few days off then guess will be back to it!
