Roy Brook must have raced a couple dozen times this season already. Won a national champs too, You're waay off.

I have been working on my weight since September. I have been reporting exactly what I have been doing to work on my weight, 1-2 hours OTBike at 20 mph, in addition to my standard 10K-20K OTErg. In the spring, summer, and fall, as you know, I also rowed OTW.

My weight is great. No problems at all this year, given my preparation.

Cheers, Paul.

See you at BIRC?

ranger
Absolutely not - I've no intention of racing my training, that would be ruinous. I'm still working on my stroke, and once that's ready I'll just wait until I'm old enough to be in an age group where that stroke will be enough to win.

OTErg.

Roy has one sub-6:40 lightweight row, and no wonder.

He has to struggle so hard to make weight, it threatens his health and well-being.

So he has only raced as a lighweight a handful of times.

No relation to me, then.

I have been racing continuously.

I have had the best 2K in my age and weight division for the last two years and have been racing five or six times a year.

I'll do this same this year, including over the pond at BIRC.

The 55s lwt BIRC championship record is mine, from my race there in 2006.

At BIRC, no 55s lwt has come close to my 2006 row since.

Rowing well (12.5 SPI) at low drag (120 df.), I am now quite a bit better than I was in 2006.

In fact, I think I can now beat my own 55s lwt BIRC championship record by 20 seconds (or more).

We'll soon see.

He has two. And one was a 6:34. You can't even best the slower of his times.

Classy of you to leave his name out of it. After all, "did you hear about the guy who veered across the river and rammed an oncoming 8 at the Head of the Grand?" is still a great conversation starter

In case you didn't notice, Mike won his race. I'm sure you are thrilled for Mike, just as we will all be thrilled when you win the HOCR next year. That victory of yours at the HOCR will be remarkable indeed given that you skipped head racing this year except for that one notable, unfortunate time.

The weather at the Head of the Grand this year was exceptionally nice this year. Most years it is cold and windy. You have missed a good opportunity to practice in typical head race conditions. We had strong winds last week including yesterday.

Cue for the old I have to concentrate on the BIRC and therefore can't do OTW.

That seems like a major blunder. We're talking about a guy that rows OTW as well or better than anyone his age, who is still a novice and continuing to improve. On the other hand, international competition on the erg isn't something that he does well these days. Look at the record: can't get himself to WIRC for several years running due to failure to qualify for a free flight, or inability to make robust travel plans, and the last time he did, he got trounced by over 30 seconds, coming in something like 10th place! Much easier to learn to steer than to learn how not to be a coward, no?

My goals right now are OTErg, Byron.

Keep on the subject, if you want to contribute.

All of the blather about OTW rowing doesn't have anything to do with me at the moment.

On the other hand, I must say this:

My progress OTW has been great, given that I have done it just as a supplement to my erging, and without any coaching whatsoever.

I am delighted with it.

Next year could be a breakout year for me OTW, after I pull 6:16 OTErg.

I will be in great shape.

My erg times have been the best in the 55 lwts now for the last two years, right around WR pace, even though I have been pulling these 2Ks at max drag, without any race preparation, just as a supplement to my training.

I get about a dozen seconds over 2K from race preparation.

And I now row well (12.5 SPI) at low drag (120 df.).

In my races this year, I think that that the combination of these two, vis-a-vis my ability to row WR pace without them, will put be me in the range of 20 seconds faster than WR pace for my age and weight.

I suppose we'll soon see.

My goal for WIRC 2010 is 6:20; my goal for WIRC 2010 is 6:16.

True.

Since, 2006, no one has come anywhere near my 55s lwt BIRC championship record of 6:42.6.

Neither you nor Roy have ever even medaled at BIRC.

Nothing at all.

Since 2006, the 55s lwt race at BIRC has been won in 7:02.9 (2007), 6:53.6 (2008), and 7:01.9 (2009).

If my weight had been better in 2006, I would have pulled 6:30, rowing badly at max drag, again, without even preparing for it.

If I pull 6:20 this year, as I think I might, now that I row well (12.5 SPI) at low drag (120 df.), the mark will be permanent.

It will never be broken.

No _40s_ lwt at BIRC has ever pulled 6:20, much less someone who is 59.9, as I will be for BIRC 2010.

Still think you're 10-20 seconds better? See you at BIRC. I hear the stands are nice and safe and warm.
