I think the 2:00 split is a good goal to have and then be able to maintain it consistently.
Definately agree with this. I dont mind admitting on a bad day, holding 2:00 for 10k, 15k or 60min can still feel challenging. I did my first HM this week and averaged 2:06...i know im quicker than that but i think the distance intimidated me a little, i under rated it (22spm) and i wasnt fully over a recent virus...not that im making excuses! My point is, performance seems to change so much with erging. I could wake up tomorrow and row 2:00 for an hour or struggle to maintain it for a 10k. If im lacking power on the day i will rate higher, if im feeling powerful i will rate low...r18. Not sure if thats the right way but its what i do. Most of my rowing is steady state, 40min to 60min and almost always at 2:00. Anything below 5k is a different story.

Yep, I rate up when I'm tired or weak. I also have days when 2:00 pace for my favourite 10 miles session feels like a struggle and others when I can sit at 1:53 the whole way.

Your mind and central nervous system play a big part in how you feel on any given day so always focus on what is usual rather than the inexplicable bad days when you're just not feeling up for it.

Also, when it feels like it's 'on', don't hesitate to smash it out and try for a PB. Those days don't come around often enough

Nice! I dont come on this thread much but when i do you always have a new PB. Great to see, im finding it quite motivating actually. Well done martin.
Thanks Tim! I'm on a roll atm, almost every TT is a PB, often big improvements, very satifying. Always nice to hear my work can motivate other rowers. Looking at your signature I think we're pretty close at the non-sprint-distances, your 2k and 10k are good targets for my next TT, and maybe you'll give the 1h a try soon
Yeah definately mate. My 500m is out of date and needs a retest but sprints are off limits for another few weeks due to a bad shoulder that is taking ages to heal. Id love to be working towards a 6:20ish 2k. Longer pieces dont seem to make my shoulder any worse...im going to try a 60min very soon for sure.
I had problems with my shoulder and forearm about 7 months ago, very annoying, my solution was to stop rowing for a few weeks and bikeerged instead.
So we have the same goal, I hope to reach sub 6:30 this season, but it's a very tough target. Right now, looking at my progress at other distances and some interval sessions, sub 6:40 should be possible, I'll give it a try soon but need some good interval sessions to prepare properly.
Good luck for both your 2k target and your 60min attempt!

What time/distance will your next TT be, have you planned something?
When I started at the beginning of the year (more or less - I had erged before, but never with any plan or structure), I had targets of 7:50 for 2k, 20:00 for 5k and 40:00 for 10k. I didn't know about all the other rating distances and times.

I later revised the 2k target to 7:40 and added 14k for 60'.

40min is a long way off for now, but I reckon the next is aiming for 7500m in 30mins. For some reason, I've always regarded a 2:00 split as somehow "respectable". So perhaps as my fitness improves, I should shoot for 7500m, then the 40min 10k, then 15k for the hour.

That should keep me busy for the foreseeable!
With your recent 5k PB and looking at the trainings you post here the 7.500 30min should be in reach soon, the structured plan will help a lot and the other goals will come faster than you think. Good luck and keep on posting, it's always nice to see other ergers improve :D

Retested 60:00 minutes today. New PB with 15.651m - slightly less than a training partner of mine who frequents this forum :-)

Edit: Also made it to 4.000.000 meters :-D

Thanks. Rowed 15.000m in 56:55.6 yesterday afternoon, so 15.750+m are definitely possible.

Enjoy your 60 min session :D

Did you find it easier mentally watching the metres count down or is it easier based on time? Or is each equally painful?

That is indeed a very good and interesting question. Personally, i try not to look at either the remaining time or the remaining meters too often, but (for me) I think it is easier to watch the meters counting down. However, on those longer distances, it is nearly equally painful :-)

Personally I prefer the metres counting down, probably because I'm more used to it. It feels slightly strange watching the time count down

If it's a training piece, I do too. The metres count down a lot quicker than time. It's not good for morale when there's five minutes to go and the lizard brain tells me that's only fifty strokes...
I wonder if it's a bit reversed for a TT: "Ooh, good, I've still got some time left to crank out some more metres"?

Your 15k pace was almost exactly what you need for 15.800 60min, just hold the pace 3min longer :D I hope to get close to 15.800 too as my yesterdays PB was too conservative at the beginning, but it looks like you're a tad ahead atm. Next TT for me are 5k and 2k I think, but I'll give the 60min a try soon, enough time for you to pass my PB

Indeed, but I felt really exhausted after yesterdays and todays session. Need to relax for a bit and then start working on my 2k though i am not a fan of short distances :(
