To compare you need to look at your races, 100 % efforts show your technique. So take two races and see that there is not much differance.ranger wrote:I no longer row as I did seven years ago:

We'll get a good idea how the OTW sculling is going this Saturday if Ranger actually does the Grand River Challenge, which is held in Grand Rapids. I see R. Cureton and one other competitor pre-registered in the masters 1x according to reggatacentral.com:Ranger wrote:I now use the same stroke on the erg and I do in my 1x and I can sustain a pretty nice 2:00 @ 30 spm OTW.
Depending on conditions, the 5K should take about twenty minutes if the 2:00 pace is accurate.
My advice: Rich, enjoy the experience even if the row doesn't go as expected.

When I am now trained to race, I certainly will!hjs wrote:To compare you need to look at your races, 100 % efforts show your technique. So take two races and see that there is not much differance.ranger wrote:I no longer row as I did seven years ago:

I haven't trained to race for the last six years.
I have just been doing foundational rowing.
I haven't been doing hard distance rowing or sharpening.
You have to prepare for a 2K to do your best.
Anaerobic energies are 20% of a 2K race, and rates are high, pushing the limits of aerobic energies as well.
Foundational rowing focusses on technique and stroking power, technical and skeletal-muscular issues, not issues of maximal aerobic and anaerobic development/capacity.
My claim is this:
When I am fully trained, I will race like the rower you see in the second video, not the rower you see in the first, although I will use the _rate_ of the first rower, and a lighter stroking power than the second, pretty near a midpoint _between_ the very different stroking powers of two (e.g., 12.3 SPI).
The first rower is pulling 1:38 @ 36 spm (10.3 SPI)
The second rower is pulling 1:36 @ 28 spm (14.3 SPI)

I am just going to take it easy in my first head race.
My goals are to stay upright, get down the course, not hit anyone/anything, rate 24 spm, and barely escape dying of hypothermia.

I don't have any idea what this will turn out to be in terms of pace.
Are those expectations too high?

Yep, Dad was there in Melbourne in 1956. testing Snell, Elliott, and the boys.
I grew up with that heartometer.
Dad invented it.
Yep, those are extension press-ups, although the guy in the video only does four or so.
It's better if you can do 20-30.
50 is excellent.
Or you can do them this way, if you are _really_ good:

These are also pretty good:

This sort of push-up seems easier on the eyes, though.

She needs to get in a better rhythm, though.
Up, down, up, down.
Oh well.
I'm sure she is better in her private moments, off camera.

I'm not doing that regatta. The other competitor is T. Cahill. I don't know him. I think you're right on in taking it easy and concentrating on staying in control. Getting the experience is more important than seeing how fast you can move your boat. Do that when the water is warm. Head races are in the time of the year when people just have fun and don't take it all that seriously. You want your stroke rate to be low enough that you stay in control. If you feel like you're on the verge of catching a crab, drop the stroke rate and relax. This is no time of the year for swimming.ranger wrote:Hi, "other competitor":Byron Drachman wrote:We'll get a good idea how the OTW sculling is going this Saturday if Ranger actually does the Grand River Challenge, which is held in Grand Rapids. Yes, my sculling is going great.Byron Drachman wrote:We'll get a good idea how the OTW sculling is going this Saturday if Ranger actually does the Grand River Challenge, which is held in Grand Rapids.
I'll get my wife to get a video and post it tomorrow.
You still crab?
I don't.
Did 12K today, no crabs at all.
Actually, if I keep my stroke light and easy, I think I can rate 27 spm on Saturday, if the race is just 4K.
For me, the OTW equivalent of 1:51 @ 27 spm on the erg is 2:14 @ 27 spm OTW.
That might be a nice rate and pace to shoot for.
Grand Rapids is a great venue for me.
My daughter now works in Grand Rapids, just out of college, doing service work in public health for Americorps.
So I can go over to Grand Rapids on Friday and stay with her.
That will also give me time on Friday to check out the race course.
I've just heard that races don't start until 10 A.M. on Saturday.
That's also great.
It will be warmer if races start later in the day.

I'll take a bad stroke every once in a while, maybe enough to cause a little wobble, but nothing remarkable. I have never flipped while sculling, but that is no guarantee that I won't flip the next time I go out. I have logged about 16.5 million meters in a single OTW over the last four years so I'm overdue. You still crab?

Then I think I'll even do better at St. Catherines the week after WIRC.
I'll get in another week of sharpening and weight control.

I put in a couple of million meters OTW this spring, summer, and fall, which is good for me, given that I do about twice as many meters as this on the erg during this time and then another twice as many meters on the erg during the indoor season, when I can't row OTW.Byron Drachman wrote:I'll take a bad stroke every once in a while, maybe enough to cause a little wobble, but nothing remarkable. I suppose I do about 10 million meters a year, then, counting both, about 8 million on the erg and 2 million OTW.
Next year, I will extend my daily OTW rows to 20K.
I have no problem with that now.
When the weather is nice, I row OTW right at dawn after doing 20K on the erg just before dawn, in the early morning hours.
I eat breakfast in between.
Makes you feel great!
