22/7/24(Mon)

3x5km(90secs)

15km-55.48.2-1.51.6-R21-252w

18.38.4-1.51.8-R21

18.38-1.51.8-R21

18.31.8-1.51.1-R21

Considering I've felt weak as a kitten the last few days, this felt controlled and strong.

Dropped the damper to 5 from 7 and this felt easier on the arms and legs so I think for the longer stuff, I'll keep with a lower drag.
Very good result. Nothing weak about this at all
Thanks Stu, quite enjoy the drawn out sessions.

Shame there isn't more longer races....

I was back into training last week with 3 sessions with 30, 40 and 45 min and a 6,5k run.
But then on sunday I was at the open-air pool for 4 hours as my youngest son is learning to swim. And I got a severe ongoing spasm at my lower back being hardly able to work after my vacation . I hope it will be over soon as I wanted to give the upcoming rowlympics challenge a try.

At least you thought about trying the CTC, I don't think I am going to even try it as I am not in good form for anything longer than 2K and not really in best 2K shape either. My short rows are still fine and I can push it on them but just not feeling good going hard on the longer rows.
I definitely go through patches of not performing and then being my own worst enemy as I clutch at straws with daft decisions and make it even worse. I'm currently going through one of these, and I seem to recall that you have similar issues like this too.

What's worked for me in the past is to ease off, do some steady and low end grey zone rowing with no expectations just to keep it all ticking over. It always passes eventually, but trying to fight it head on isn't a good option, for me at least
Yes, we often have dealt with same struggles - what is worrisome is I seem to have these issues more frequently as I keep getting older. My body seems to fight me more and my patience is lower which makes my mental game weaker.

There's no way of knowing if this is the thin end of the wedge and it will keep getting worse, or it's just another obstacle for you to overcome. Admittely, a bigger obstacle and a lot more problematic than before, manageable nevertheless.

Maybe doing what Rocky has done, and start looking at your best efforts as an age group rather than overall will be helpful? I'm reluctant to accept that I won't achieve the results I could do only a few years ago, but I maybe do need to do exactly that. Easing the pressure can be a potent force if it's channeled in the right direction.

Having read that after 40yo we start to decline, as a general rule, it's maybe relevant that there's a best before date on all of us, but it's an arbitrary process that doesn't neatly fit into a box of where we want it to be as the mind and the body are opposing forces.

If it is just your mental fortitude that is the issue, then we both know that can be worked on and needs constant reassurance and development. Confidence is a febrile matter but we both know you can master it like you've done before. If that is now at a slightly lower level remains to be seen, but it's within your reach, admittedly maybe now with a slightly higher price to pay to achieve it.

I was intending on doing a steady longer distance, but I don't think that treating myself with kid gloves is working at the moment, so I need to try another tactic.

I was wondering where the tipping point would be, and it turned out to roughly halfway through the last 10 mins interval. I backed off and then ramped it for the last few hundred metres. It was a good mental battle for the last five minutes, as it could have ended very differently

Hi folks....restarting....again.....after training disruptions from illness, injury and holidays. Still working through the BPP for some structure but the weeks off set me back and I'm still on Week 10. Hope all is well with everyone.

Last night's 3x2km/4'r.....target was 1:54.5 from back in May.....2 holidays and a cold ago  . Lots of mental chatter before committing to the 3rd piece as the mental fortitude is not quite there.

7/24 - 15k steady; 3 x 5k (1:00 rest for water and towel off). Finally feel like I am about back on track. HR back down to more normal levels, sweating during the session is still there but more normal compared to the last few days, and felt pretty strong with each stroke which I really contribute to deadlifting. One thing I've noticed is that resting HR is up about 6-8bpm since coming home from my work trip each night and HRV is quite a bit lower still; not sure what is going on there but something I've noticed. A lot of work responsibilities the remainder of the week and through the weekend so likely training once a day.

Been a while since I posted... Hope you all are doing well, getting some solid training in, and enjoying your summers (or winters in the southern hemisphere), wherever you may be.

I took the last ~5 weeks off work and crammed it full of several trips that made the training calendar messy, but were much-needed breaks for awesome time with friends and family, and just generally good for the soul. Overall training volume in July (~200-240k) will be just over half of what it was in both May and June (~400k), but it's been great to see that my fitness has generally held up despite the decrease in both volume and the # of higher-intensity sessions.

A few highlights from the last few weeks:

Neither the 6k nor 5k were "mid-life" personal bests, but I was nonetheless quite pleased with how relatively close they were to my PBs from the spring considering the numerous breaks from training over the last few weeks and the minimal mental prep for each of them. Knowing that I wasn't going to challenge PB territory took some of the pressure off and helped me stay more relaxed before and during the pieces.

The biggest surprise training-wise this month was yesterday's 8x500m, a Pete Plan workout I'd done several times over the past winter and spring, failing to crack a sub-1:30 average on my last attempt in early April. Having done very little sprint/interval work lately I didn't have any particular plan other than to focus on each interval one at a time, with the goal of sneaking in just under 1:30, and see how many intervals I could keep it up for. Once I had knocked out the sixth interval, as rough as things already felt at that point, I knew I had a shot to finish the workout. I had to dig deep on the 8th and final interval, probably more so than I have on any piece since my April 2k, but got the job done.

I'll return to more of a "normal" training schedule in early August once my kids are back in school and we're locked back into our normal routine and rhythm as a family. Sub7 has had a recent addition to the team who is crushing my times (he did our June ITC of 4x2k/4:00r at a 6:30 average, and turned in a 16:28 5k this month), so I need to step my game up! Until then though, I'll enjoy a couple more lighter weeks (and lots of golf!).

Impressive 500m's Justin!

Can you divulge the name of the new addition to the team?
