Rowed my 1st 5k today, that was tough! But it was a good mental workout if anything.

time meter /500m s/m
19:03.1 5000 1:54.3 25

Doing a 2k soon, hoping for sub 7.

Tried rowing 500m x 10, r2 tonight. Pleasantly surprised to see a new PB in the middle there of 1:46.2. My previous PB was 1:52 a few months ago. My stroke is definitely getting stronger.

That's a good pace if you have never done a 5k before

First 5k and you pulled a 19:03? Congrats! What do you normally row?

@mitchel674 :
I just started rowing ~1.5 weeks ago so haven't been doing much! Been following the Pete Plan so far.
I'm also 6'2, 19 y/o, and coming from about 4 years of competitive distance running, so that probably plays a factor in it!

Yeah, it will do. 5k is quite an aerobic task so your running, general fitness & age will give you great foundations to build on.

Young, fairly tall, aerobic background. You've got a lot of things going for you VirginiaRower. I doubt it'll take you long to go sub-7.

@VirginiaRower- that's a great time for a first 5k. I think if you stick with this you can do very good things.

Set a new 10k PB today: 38.29 flat. Improvement of 6.9''. Tried to keep my SR down for first few k and power up. This helped keep my HR down and meant I had some left in the tank to up the pace through the last 3k and do a very fast last k.

Time Meters Pace S/M HR
38:29.0 10,000m 1:55.4 28 163
3:52.7 1,000m 1:56.3 25 146
3:53.3 2,000m 1:56.6 26 155
3:53.3 3,000m 1:56.6 27 158
3:53.6 4,000m 1:56.8 27 160
3:53.4 5,000m 1:56.7 28 163
3:53.8 6,000m 1:56.9 28 165
3:53.1 7,000m 1:56.5 29 164
3:51.0 8,000m 1:55.5 29 172
3:47.1 9,000m 1:53.5 30 175
3:37.8 10,000m 1:48.9 32 181
Rob, 40, 6'1", 188 lbs. Potomac, MD, USA (albeit English-Australian originally).

2k: 6:45.4 (2023)

@Rob - very nice. The last three splits tell me you've got a fair bit more in you.

I also did a 10k test today. Set a 10k PB of 37:46.2. The aim was sub 38 so I'm pretty pleased. Was more of a psychological battle than shorter distances, as I'm not used to feeling that bad with 6k left to row. I ended up focusing on reaching 8k, since I've rowed 8k at a faster pace than I was going at, then broke the last 2k into manageable chunks (lots of counts of 5 and 10). Stu's inner chimp stuff helped out a few times too.

10000m - 37:46.2 - 1:53.3 - 24.9

02000m - 7:35.3 - 1:53.8 - 24
04000m - 7:33.0 - 1:53.2 - 25
06000m - 7:30.7 - 1:52.6 - 25
08000m - 7:37.5 - 1:54.3 - 25
10000m - 7:29.7 - 1:52.4 - 26

By the way, the splits are the way they are because I wanted to get a 6k PB, which I did (22:39). Silly I know. Hopefully with flatter pacing and with this row in the bag I could hit 1:53 splits.

Great work Rob and Tom. Very impressive, with two PBs in one attempt too Tom. 10k is a tough distance to judge so well done to you both and i agree with Tom that you have got more to come Rob.

'Owning' the inner chimp is a great technique that i haven't used enough recently. I must remember that

Thanks Tom and Stu. @Tom- great effort and love the 2 PBs in one go. I had always thought your 10k was out of date but you absolutely obliterated it (and coming back from illness too). Lovely.

@Stu - to be honest my 6k is so old and so out of date that beating it during a 10k attempt isn't all that impressive. I plan to do a proper 6k in two weeks time. I agree that 10k is hard to judge, or at least it is for me since I've done so few of them I don't quite know what to expect.

@Rob - thanks Rob. I hadn't really ever done a true 10k TT before, just hard 10ks, so my old PB wasn't really a true PB. I think it's safe to say I'm completely recovered from my illness now.

My issue with 10k is I have done too many of them over the years and I have a mental obstacle with going fast enough to beat my PB.

6k is a horrible distance too. I can't get my head around the pacing.

You're definitely recovered from illness and your ergophobia a few months ago!!

"Easiest" way to get a PB is rowing a distance you never rowed before :P
50 kms, 3:55:42. Can consider it the 4th FM of the year too I guess :)
