Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
I have to admit.... I have been incredibly un-nerved for several weeks leading up to this event. Last night was the worst. Had a glass of red wine and calmed down a bit. Race day was totally different... my body felt good during warmup and the whole event went by so fast! BAMM and it was over!JerekKruger wrote: @Lance - well done Lance. I'm planning to enter at least one race this year (BRIC). I'm not looking forward to the nerves: used to hate OTW rowing from that point of view.
my race plan was excicuted almost perfectly (stroke rate was a bit too high for the first 30 seconds) Averaged 1:44 over the first 500m then stayed close to my target pace of 1:47 until I pulled a 1:36 over the last 200m. Exactly what I hoped to do.

@ LC: Apropos the various pacing strategy arguments presented in your Paul’s Law thread (Training subforum, 30 Jan.) those splits sure look like a (conservative) French Protocol race execution to me. Thoughts Lance? The glass of red the French Canadien protocol?

lol... 7oz of Red wine 10 hours before a race is my French connection.jackarabit wrote:@ LC: Apropos the various pacing strategy arguments presented in your Paul’s Law thread (Training subforum, 30 Jan.) those splits sure look like a (conservative) French Protocol race execution to me. In all honesty.... I originally wanted to do a steady paced 1:46 but realized last second that holding off a bit to 1:47 would ensure that I wouldn't "lose my air" in the last 500m (which happened to me twice recently). Ive got a solid 200m sprint if I dont lose my air.
I kept saying to myself "don't blow up... don't blow up" during the race. Then, when I passed that critical 300m to go, I started to ramp up... last 200 at 1:36... last pull at 1:30...
One more race today coming up in 90 minutes... the 4 Min... fingers crossed

Another personal best today!!!
1195m in 4 min, an improvement of 7m. My last serious attempt at a 4min was about 8 months ago.
Two PB's in one day... now its time for a celebration dinner!!!

Congrats Lance, always great to PB during a race. Is that your first race then? Awesome work! Congrats on the four minute one too.
Neo - nice job on the full marathon! I've never even done one of those!

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
I had a 5k TT planned for today. I Slept badly last night and woke up this morning with what I suspect are the beginnings of a cold so was considering skipping it. In the end I decided to do it anyway as I felt like I could go sub-18 and if I do end up properly ill it might be a while before I feel up to it again. Turned out to be a good call:
5000m - 17:55.4 - 1:47.5 - 27.3
1000m - 3:35.6 - 1:47.8 - 27
2000m - 3:36.0 - 1:48.0 - 27
3000m - 3:35.7 - 1:47.9 - 27
4000m - 3:35.6 - 1:47.8 - 27
5000m - 3:32.5 - 1:46.3 - 28
Here's the ErgData graph:

Bit of a sprint in me at the end so it's probably not an actual max, but I doubt I'm mentally tough enough to go much faster. It helped a lot that I'd done 3000m at 1:47.7 previously and I'm fitter now than I was when I did, so I set myself a goal to at least go past 3000m. Once I'd past 3000m I convinced myself that what was left was an "easy" 2k (after all, I've rowed 2k a lot faster than 1:48).
Anyway, I'm pleased with this. I realise for my height, weight and age it's nothing remarkable but still. Of course Paul's Law now tells me I ought to be able to row a 6:43.6 2k: the first time a shorter distance has lagged behind a longer one for me.
EDIT: forgot to mention, the current top two ranked 5ks in my age group at 14:00.0 and 14:08.0. Strangely neither of them are verified

Tom, a PB for a 5km is a hard won effort, especially on a Monday after a bad night's sleep and feeling a bit rough.
It's only ever a battle against yourself so enjoy the feeling of having progressed and rest assured that you are able to push a bit harder next time. Well done mate
I don't pay any attention to unverified times now that it's so easy to verify a time.

Thanks Stu and Henry. Feels good, though now the next time is knocking (first off I'd like to try to do a 6k at 1:48 as well).

You've probably never claimed to have rowed 5k 54s faster than the world record thoughhjs wrote:Ps, my rowing results are not verifiedBut rowed, some in races, again not verified. Could be I dreamed them up

Nice one Tom - join the 17:55 club
(mine was 17:55.7 - just looked it up)
(TBH I don't think it'll be long before you break that)
And FWIW I don't even include "Unverified" when I look at rankings...too many people with "selective" memories

Some people simply have no clue, or make typos. On the other hand there are people who fake stuff, a us guy used to claim all sorts of Wr, but never was seen in public doing so. Even faked a raceresult.....JerekKruger wrote:Thanks Stu and Henry. Feels good, though now the next time is knocking (first off I'd like to try to do a 6k at 1:48 as well).

My pm is older and parts are broken, so can,t update it. Need to buy a new pm5.
Talking about that, yesterday, did a 60min TT, ski, was just over half time, on my way to 151.x when my pm stopped...

Luckily it was not 50/55 min in.... Still very annouying though.
