What was your sb when you were 52? What is your sb this year? I know you're an English prof but I'm sure even you can see that your times are declining in line with everyone else your age. However even I'm surprised that you've never been able to beat Roy's soft WR for your age group. No more than an AT row for you so I'm puzzled that you're still 3 seconds off the pace..

Re: The Two Types of Training
Logical to you, I assume - this is what you're saying, not me. You stated that racing is just holding a steady pace and pulling, and that the only pre-condition for it is to train well (present tense, please note; you don't have to be in some way 'finished' with your training, you just need to be in the process of doing it well).ranger wrote:Logical to whom?PaulH wrote:The logical conclusion, then, is that you haven't trained well
You have shown that you struggle to hold a steady pace and pull. If we ask why, by your logic the only determinant is that you be training well. Hence, you are not training well. Your logic, not mine.

Watching ranger for years now: Do you feel as I do?
RWB is sharpening. All he does is sharpen : vis. "no easy strokes" "13.x spi" and the like.
It's given ranger great scores but no WR in the 55-59 age group. Hence, it is a failure.
The complete absence of distance rankings over 7 years from him is an indication that he has been unable to maintain his excellent prior distance work (16.7k/60' in 2003).
Rich: Don't misconstrue me. You are great. The sad thing is you fall short. You are unable to get a 55-59 all-time best at any distance (or time) or weight category.
Change your training and you'll return to the very top on the erg as a 60 year old.
Best wishes for the future in the sparsely populated age groups (60's and beyond).

Come off it. You have to be some kind of super moron to spend as much time training as you do and then describe your performances as "without even preparing for it".ranger wrote: In public, with everyone watching, I am rowing WR pace, without even preparing for it.
Even without preparing for it, my 2K times are over 20 seconds better than anyone my age and weight (or older).
A serious question; what on earth is the motivation behind making your continuous quest to make a complete and utter idiot of yourself?

Distance rowing prepares you for distance trials.
Distance trials prepare you to sharpening.
Sharpening prepares you to race.
I am just finishing up my distance rowing.

Beautiful morning OTW.
Put in 12K OTW, after 20K on the erg.
If I am not doing long warm ups or cross-training, I don't seem to have any trouble doing both.
I do my erging before dawn and then my OTW rowing just after dawn.
My OTW rowing feels fine, such as it is.
26 spm is now comfortable for just paddling along.
I will be vastly better at the end of this OTW rowing season if I can put in 20K a day in my 1x.

I had no idea that TSO wasn't sharpening and doing distance trials because he said he was.
Thanks for sharing that Brian :
Ranger, do you have any plans on even going for one distance trial prior to May 1st?
Didn't think so.

I think you're right. The RWB is putting too much emphasis on anaerobic instead of aerobic training. The RWB probably encourages handle-downs. Just take a break when it starts to hurt. The 2003 60 minute piece could have been done on the just row setting, so like his FM@2:11 a couple of years ago, it was probably filled with breaks.
cue to Ranger: I rowed world records in 2003 and I'm so much better now.
Re: The Two Types of Training
Yes, RWBs is a type of sharpening--for the skeletal-muscular system and for technique.mikvan52 wrote:RWB is sharpening. All he does is sharpen : vis. "no easy strokes" "13.x spi" and the like
It is _very_ hard, and I did it for five years.
I don't do any low rate rowing now, though. I stopped doing low rate rowing about a year ago.
I am now doing distance rowing, different matter entirely.
Minimal rate for me now is 26 spm, with the norm around 29 spm @ 10 MPS.
I am no longer pulling 13-16 SPI, I am pulling 11 SPI.
_All_ of the strokes are easy.
I will pull a little harder during sharpening, and for racing, 12 SPI.
That will be moderate stroking, not hard, not easy.
Then again, I will only have to do it for 6-7 minutes.
I will try to row about 26 spm when I am OTW.
