Mike ... I do not believe you are qualified to offer an opinion on ranger's OTW ... for the following reason ...

You have zero experience coaching any rowers who ...
> have three WR rows
> are 59.5 years old at the end of 2010
> teach poetics
> have a life long exposure to competitive sport
> understand sport is art

I'm sure there are other reasons but this is a good beginning.

BTW ... this isn't personal, it is the truth ... no more, no less

Mike--

I'll get a video of my rowing now, say, 2:05 @ 25 spm in my Fluid.

I'll think you'll find it just fine.

You should.

Because you are no better.

No 60s rower is any better.

Sure, if I was going 2:35 @ 25 spm, like Byron, I would have a problem.

But I am going 2:05 @ 25 spm.

That's not a problem at all.

That's doing _very_ well and having a _whole_ lot of fun.

No you won't you stupid, lying, cheating, moronic, welching fraudster.
That's just another virtual promise (like today's 2K trial) that you won't deliver.

No, _you_ have zero proof of this.

I have all the proof in the world--every day.

I do at least 10K of rowing a day, 1:49 @ 22 spm .

Sure, I'll do it--one of these days.

But, hey, no need.

My UT work is now done.

I am now doing UT2 work just to warm up.

My focus now is on AT work.

12.5 SPI

118 df.

Repeat 2Ks in a rate ladder, starting from 25 spm and working up to 29 spm.

I don't want to be pedantic but...

The trial was scheduled for yesterday, not today.

o.k., o.k.

No more "intentions," or promises.

I'll just show up and row at BIRC and WIRC.

See you there!

If you do 1:46 @ 22 spm, which I have been reaching now from time to time, you are a 6:04 man. You are rowing perfectly: 13 SPI.

You don't have to row fast to know that you are fast OTW.

You are fast when, at a comfortable distance rating, like 22 spm, your boat _leaps_ along at over 10 MPS: the shell sings and the bubbles dance in your wake.

You just row easily, listening for singing and watching the bubbles on parade.

ranger
Rich, what you do UT2 doesn't make you a sub-6:20 man. Nothing does until you get on and row 2k under 6:20.

And I can't agree with you saying that you don't have to row fast to know that you're fast OTW. Again, you need to row fast - sometimes - to know that you're fast OTW.

Though most of the time I'm content to paddle along at 15-17 and look at the birds, both of the female and avian variety.

Sure.

But 1:49 @ 22 spm, steady state, at 75% HRR, is good, safe training.

And it tells you that you _can_ be a 6:20 man, if you want.

If you row 1:56 @ 22 spm, steady state, at 75% HRR, as Mike VB does, it tells you that you can't be any better than a 6:44, even if you break your ass trying.

If you row 2:10 @ 22 spm, as Byron does, it tells you that you don't understand leverage, and therefore are missing the sport entirely.

Byron drives off his heels at the catch, and then acting as though he knows something about rowing, advises others to do the same.

That is, Byron does get his weight forward onto the balls of his feet at the catch, so that he can use his quads.

He just clunks down his legs with his hams.

Disaster.

This is not only uninformed and incompetent.

Given that he recommends this to others, as though he knows what he is talking about, it is downright dangerous, criminal.

It can prevent others from ever learning to row well.

Sure he does.

And I have suggested two ways he could check out my rowing and give me a response.

(1) We could just row side by side for 20K, doing 2:10 @ 22 spm. Next June on the Connecticut, day after day, for a couple of weeks?

(2) In the meantime, I'll post a video doing some 2:05 @ 25 spm OTW, and he can comment on that.

Commenting on a three-year-old video, as he has just done, though, is irrelevant.

For a beginner, three years of sculling includes a lifetime of discoveries about how to move a boat.

BTW, over the next six weeks, I will time myself on the Head of the Grand course a dozen times or so.

If I do better than 2:05 pace for the 4K, it really won't be to my advantage to look to Mike for advice on my rowing.

Why?

Because I will already be as good as he is.

To do 2:05 pace, I'll only have to rate 25 spm.
