FWIW I have been adding weight sessions in front of speed serg sessions since i last posted. Thought an update might be of interest to anyone else thinking of adding weight sessions in front of speed sets.
Im following the PP more or less. I have to juggle training around work/family life as do all of course i'm sure so it does vary form what Petes plan some days.
A weight session for me is D/L, Squats, Upright rowing and benching. The weights i am lifting are not comparable to a 1RM as i work alone and have not exposed the absolutely limits, but they are tough, for context, im lifting 105kgs (D/L and Squats, 3 sets of each x6 reps).
When i started i was concerned that my legs owul dbe tired and i would not be bale to achieve what i hoped, in truth it is my cardio vascular system that is dominating these workouts, and my legs feel fine. Fine is one of those relative words, i'm sure without the weights before i could push harder, but even so, they do not appear to be limiting my efforts.
Oh and i am seeing improvements in my split times as one would hope.
Incorporating weights into erging plans?

Curious - have you ever dealt with any injury or overuse issues in rowing?

Re: Incorporating weights into erging plans?
Ive been erging regularly (this time) since May 2020, during that time i have trained for 100k following the Eddie Fletcher plan (although without weight training) and found on occasions that my diet wasn't quite keeping up with demands and have had to adjust.jcross485 wrote: ↑June 25th, 2023, 4:11 pmThis is a fantastic update!GlennUk wrote: ↑June 25th, 2023, 12:27 pmFWIW I have been adding weight sessions in front of speed serg sessions since i last posted. One of the key points from my perspective of that plan was that rest days are compulsory, if necessary add extra days.
I've carried that principle through to my training now, which is broadly following the Pete Plan.
So far i haven't felt/seen any evidence of overtraining.
Typically i will do a weights/speed combined session, two days recovery/endurance, then a day rest.
So far no injuries, sore muscles occasionally, but so far nothing more, fingers crossed.

Re: Incorporating weights into erging plans?
It seems like you found a few general plans that suit you...which is awesome!
I would be interested to see how things progress over say 2-3 cycles of the Pete Plan the way you are doing it now, then take a cycle where you do the speed erg sessions without the strength work first (but not dropped completely).

Yeah, definitely a good idea to incorporate weight training alongside erging, and that Eddie Fletcher plan definitely agrees on the importance of those rest days - very important for avoiding injury and overtraining. It's awesome that you're seeing improvements with the weights in your split times, and glad to hear your body is holding up. Sounds like your training schedule is pretty specifically tailored to you, which is great. The Pete Plan always has room for tweaks; it's all about what works for you. Keep up the good work!
Re: Incorporating weights into erging plans?
Id argue that all plans should be treated as guides as opposed to a set of rules, we are not all the same. The EF plan gave me the confidence by 'allowing' me to add in extra rest days if i needed them. In truth i am mostly forced to adjust my training to fit around work, and sometimes family too. I dont feel guilty about not sticking to the plan.mementobeansbeef wrote: ↑June 26th, 2023, 12:05 pmThe Pete Plan always has room for tweaks; it's all about what works for you. Keep up the good work!
