Point taken, if the boy in our group Saturday is anything to go by, his calorie intake is the last thing on his mind (for context he is into weights, plans to break the Uni combined weight for DL/Squat/Press when he gets there in Sept) but i dont recall being overly worried about what I ate, or its impact on me (in truth i was a skinny little runt up until my early 20s).

Re: High school female - erg question
Quite frankly I'm not overly concerned with gaining weight right now, previously I wasn't eating anywhere close to enough and now I feel like I have my eating habits down - eating enough that I'm not hungry and have energy, but not too much or too little food; my weight right now seems pretty healthy to me. Although I have gained some weight, it's nothing substantial and I think it's been in muscle mass as I have noticed no difference in my clothing sizes or overall body composition (besides increased muscle in my legs) but my times are getting faster and my lifts are getting heavier which tells me whatever I'm doing is working.GlennUk wrote: ↑February 28th, 2023, 9:56 amThat's brilliant, well done thats a big margin to improve by.row23 wrote: ↑February 27th, 2023, 1:46 pmUpdate:
I did a 2k yesterday at World Indoors and got a PR of 7:59.6, hitting my goal of breaking eight minutes. My previous 2k was a 8:06.7 (12/20/2022) so it was a 7-second pr!
I logged a lot of meters and lifted this winter which I think greatly helped, and I wouldn't have been able to do it if I was busy with swimming. It felt great to finally break 8. Thanks again everyone, I definitely made the right choice quitting swim.
FWIW, i had seen this thread become active again and was reading the various threads, especially about diet.
I dont know how its going but beware when increasing your dietary intake, it can get out of hand if it is not monitored and balanced. Im still shedding soft muscle (AFA fat) gained when i trained for a long row and felt tired, so decided i needed more calories, three months later, and there it was, about 7kgs of soft muscle I dont need.
I als0 found that lots of protein shakes contain excess carbs beware of additives in your food too.
And, my training is pretty vigorous, usually 400-500cals burned on the erg and another 300-500 on lifting so even if I were to gain a few pounds I imagine it wouldn't be a huge deal of work to lose it during this stage of my life. And my smoothies/protein shakes I usually make at home - some fruit, water/milk, and whey or soy protein powder (mine is Orgain brand protein right now).
I've found that when I try to focus on calorie counting and weight, my training and health start to falter. I do tend to notice changes in my weight pretty quickly, even small amounts, so if it becomes an issue, of course I'll address it - but eating healthy and increasing my food intake has greatly helped in pretty much all areas of my life, both in and out of rowing.
And, thanks everyone for the kind words about the PB!

Well done on knocking 10S off in 4 months, no mean feat!
