@Henry - I have a lot of respect for you given the circumstances. I am sure many people would have given up.

On that topic my final target for this year is to upgrade my signature to have PBs displayed in the style you (and others) have. Target achieved!

Great thread.

One goal is to get an erg in my shed. Then row more (currently doing about 30k a week but find it hard to fit in more).

Then I'd like to try to be as good as JerekKruger's current PBs for 2k and 5k, currently 6:53.3 and 18:26.0. I'm about 8 seconds away from the 2k time and 35 away from the 5k time, though for the latter I couldn't realistically say I'd really gone for it, unlike the 2k. If I have someone to chase, as it were, it will motivate me more.

I'd also really like to get to 8,000m for the 30 minutes though have only really gone for it once and I got 7,851m.

I'd also like to figure out once and for all what drag factor I feel best at for these pieces - current thinking is 115 to 120 for the 2k.

But my real goal is just to keep going and enjoying it.

  • Sub 38 10000m,
  • Row a good half and full marathon,
  • Set a decent 60 minutes PB (as yet no specific target as I haven't done enough fast ones to have an idea of pace).
I'll be working on my aerobic base for a while now, so it'll probably be the last few that get done first. Most of these are not particularly ambitious, so if/when I achieve them I'll set new, harder goals.

Not at all, I think setting targets is a good idea and I think your targets seem achievable to me.

Sub 7 in January after resuming Erg training in November.

Sub 6:50 2k by April
10k @1:50 pace by April

One arm lock off on rings by April.

Then some top 10 Strava placings on those long climbs back in Vaucluse in spring and summer, and some 7b+ rock climbs.

Mine are simple

PB for 2K (beat 7:19), ideally go sub 7:15. Improve on 5K time, destroy my 10K time (something I've avoided). Do more 10K hard rows.

Do a half marathon at least (perhaps a full one).

Incorporate the Air Dyne Pro more into my workout and more cross training (less only rowing). Enjoy myself a bit more. I have my TV up now but haven't gotten the computer, so hooking up RowPro will make the workout (on the big screen in 4K) much more enjoyable.

I do want to take on a Kettlebell Swing routine in 2018 after my race in early Feb. I might do the 10K KB swings in 30 days.

@ Henry - sorry about your back. I have a similar thing but in my neck more. Got T-Boned driving 60 MPH when I was 21 years old. Two of my vertebrae are fused together with scar tissue (on their own over time). Also have this nasty looking (though benign) lump to the left of my spine in that area where they think spinal fluid leaked out and caused a huge cyst next to the spine (about the size of a golf ball). Who knows though, I've had another benign cyst removed years ago was much larger, so might be unrelated. It doesn't bother me much though. I think it's much worse in your lower back (like you have) versus your neck. More it causes mobility issues for me. I do have to watch how I lift because of it. I also have to make sure I'm smooth at the catch when I pull. Too jerky and it can cause radiating pain (but it doesn't affect me long).

- Sub 7 is still out there but my motivation is not as impatient as it once was
- do a Turkish get up on both sides with good form and using my 45# bell
- sub 3:18 1K
- sub 18:50 5K
- sub 39:00 10K
- something better on the half hour
- 750 watts peak power (I'm at 710 now)
- be more fit all around - more core and mobility oriented work

Looking at your 2K PB I'd say you'll going to have to get the monkey off yer back. Going sub18min for 5K was the similar for me...out of the blue one day (and technically I should've been v tired as it was at the end of the working week for me and in the hours after being at work) I just did it. The key for me was a piecemeal approach of doing more and more pieces at the target speed and over time pushing the distance. That said, you can't do that for TOO long as you'll stagnate with such a singular focus. I wish you goodluck... ;)

Yeah, I had a great improvement on 1K recently. Just did it. 2K still wigs me out.

I'm probably late but I'll add my goals: 2k:mid to low 6:20's(currently in the low 6:30's possibly high 6:20's);6k:between 20:30 and 21:00(current is 21:19.3).
Maybe it's a bit too ambitious but I'll train adeguately ( )

I was trying not to think too much about this thread - probably because I may be the only one around here who is not looking at setting new PB type goals for next year (or in fact any year from now on!). Then realised that I had to be honest with myself. 2017 has been the first year since I started this caper that I haven't added a PB to the list. I am pretty sure that those days are now officially over and I have to face the fact that the decline has started. Bit sad really but I have fought the good fight and no sense in living in the past.

So in 2018 I just have to try to hold back the tide!
my goals: keep 2k @<6:50 (June/October), 1k <1:38, get back to sub 1:28 for 500m (April), >350m for the minute (Jan), 5k @1:50 and just stay fit/well.
Oh and BTW really hopeful of getting to BRIC in December in a competitive state.

Having targets in erging can be a dicey subject. First, it assumes good health. Second, most are talking about new PBs and the PB game has its own potholes. A lot can go wrong with targets, which can be very frustrating.

Henry has discussed the dreaded "back issue." All the credit to him for overcoming and succeeding despite all that has occurred with him. No doubt his times would be even better without constant back problems.

I had good targets for 2017/18. I actually thought I could get a 2K WR. It's all gone up in a cloud of smoke. A recent MRI has shown a back with numerous problems: things protruding and getting squeezed all over the place. For well over a month, shutdown completely with severe sciatic pain - if you've ever had it, you know what I'm talking about. Sleeping is virtually impossible. Right now sorting out what to do about. I think I'm into my fourth doctor. The first two were literally clueless. It appears surgery is inevitable. Have no idea where erging is in the future. But I'm hopeful. I like doing it. Won't be any PB targets.

Lindsay, I sympathize. All of the checking on performances that I've done show that improvement for a veteran rower is not going to happen after mid-sixties. I agree, what one can do is still give the good fight, which you are.

Jim and Lindsay hit the nail on the head! Maintaining my health in order to be able to row/ride/hike/climb is the primary goal.

I can empathize with back issues, although mine aren't as severe as Jim's or Henry's. Good for you guys to keep going in the face of that handicap. I hope yours, Jim, are resolved soon.

As far as concrete erging goals, I put my last year's Nonathlon scores in the current year. I print that out before zeroing them again. That becomes my primary benchmark. Another goal is try to get in the top 10% on the C2 age/wt group rankings for each piece (that gets harder every year as the "young" guys at the bottom keep that bar high!)

If I stay healthy over the holidays, then the 2K competitions in early 2018 are the focus. Shooting for a 7:08.

I am closing the book on a bad year (fittingly closed out with a nasty cold).
Next year its do or die for me and I'll work to the limit to see whats possible (or not possible).
The goal is to do the work intelligently enough to survive. I actually like the training so the races are only the icing on the cake.

i think you are seeing it wrong.
Every candle is a new age group and therefore you are able to set a new pb in that age group. :)
