Sounds like you got a big wake up call, prof! All this nattering on about how you've got a great stroke that just flows along easily at paces you turned out to be unable to sustain for 2k in competition

6:41 may have been great compared to others in the rankings, but it blows compared to your predictions. You make predictions, we're going to judge you against them. Grade so far this semester: F

If bad taste has been displayed, it was on the part of the supposedly bereaved. Posting his "keynote speech"? To what end, other than (assuming no one of us ever actually met the deceased) as yet another act of shameless self-aggrandizement? What a mensch, what a sensitive, caring son. And, amazing fellow that he is, he somehow manages, in his grief, to erg and jump rope and ride his bike and post twenty posts a day, lest we forget that racing isn't training or what he will pull when fully trained. I suppose you think we should all be grateful for such generosity and, perhaps, share a silent moment for Mr. Special's mother. Well, follow your heart, Walter.

Timing yourself, day in and day out, tends to undermine all of these things, switching your focus to getting a good time when you are training...
...
I (and everyone else who's training logs I read) have NO problem disclosing slow, recovery days.. I suspect that your reluctance to post any workout that wont be received with shock and awe is what prevents you from logging your erging. You dont have trouble quantifying your bicycle/stepper/ab roller/situps/rope skipping do you? It's just the erging...

Given the shrill urging that I time my sessions, I assume that you (and others) think that timing is necessary.
...
the requests for you to produce distance/time timings follows from your statements of fantastical accomplishments...
Note also your never ending "I'll post a screen shot of that by Friday", by your definition, that screenshot would be racing your training..

For example:
Rich: "I pulled 1:48 for 2 hours this morning"
Everyone: "really?? can you post a screen shot of that"

Rich Option 1: "Dont race your training <insert lecture on foundational rowing>"
Rich Option 2: "I'll post it by Friday"

While kini62's original post may have been somewhat tasteless and harsh, I'd have to come down on the side of supporting his right to confront rangerboy regarding r's stupidity and hypocrisy and shamelessness.

The two types of rowing have nothing to do with rangerboy's - or anyone else's - non-rowing life. rangerboy earned every bit of opprobrium posted here, by kini62 and everyone else.

Here's a training screenshot:

Image

Done as an afterthought today, this beat the listed short-course 300m record (47.8) by a full second. It won't count, I don't think, as it wasn't on venue software or its RowPro equivalent. But it's still fast. And I can go faster, since I haven't yet begun sharpening....

How many seconds per 500 do you expect from hard sharpening? Are you going to be challenging Rob Smith's official ‡, sanctioned, venue race 41.6?

‡ bearing in mind that the "official" keepers of those short course records (NZIRA.org) have a dead cobwebsite.

I am most appreciative that Rich has shared about his Mom and about what he said at the service.

My own Mom is 90 and keeps impressing me more with how tough she is.
The emotions of what I would say, were I to speak at services for her, or for one of my friends, would be difficult.

I see Rich's posting of the service as one of the most enlightened and helpful ever posted in this forum, his sharing of these things as being most generous and thoughtful, and I think only those with cold, cold hearts would feel otherwise. I do wonder how many here have children who would think so highly, and whether it would be justifiably so.

Helpful? If you need help euologizing your mother from this world-class crackpot and figure of morbid fun (or , for that matter, from anyone else), then I pity your mother. (But, if you do quote the master, please compare your mother to the rock of Gibraltar, a truly inspired bit of poetry.)

I don't. My mother is well thought of by all of her many friends, as am I.

I had not seen the rock poem before but don't like it anyway. I write much better prose myself and more meaningful.

Have you written any poetry, and if so, is it full of hatred the way you write on here?

Oh John, that is so beautiful. Did you write it for your one true love.

You are mixed up about my opinion on birth control, as I feel women are entitled do as they wish with their bodies, and the same for anyone else. It is none of your business, just as what I do is none of your business.
