Just rowing easily at UT2, 9.5 SPI is 1:58 @ 22 spm.
If you can rate 38 spm, OTErg, you'll need 13 SPI to land the Open lwt 2K WR.

Or are you just talking about 60-year-old men like us?
I now do the easy 1:46 @ 22 spm OTErg just fine.
I am only at 2:05 @ 22 spm OTW, though.
I still have lots to learn.

I am making good progress.
This year, OTW, I am eight seconds per 500m faster at the same rate than I was last year.

As a 60s veteran, to do these things, you just need to row well.
And that's that.
And nothing at all prevents a talented 60s rower from rowing well except inappropriate training and technical neglect.

If you are good enough, technically, to pull 8 SPI OTW, as I am now, all you have to do is rate 28 spm in a head race (3 miles, 5K, etc.) and you'll be doing 1:56.
For a 60s rower, that's good enough to win, wherever, including the Head of the Charles.
At 15 seconds over erg times at the same rate, 1:56 @ 28 spm OTW is the equivalent of 1:41 @ 28 spm (12.2 SPI) OTErg.
The 60s lwt 5K WR OTErg is 1:44; the 60s hwt 5K WR OTErg is 1:43.
OTErg, Mike VB pulls 5K,1:48 @ 28 spm.
That's why he'll never win the Head of the Charles.

In the 2 hours I've been OTW, I have leant that it is not power you need but technique to move a boat, so it doesn't matter a fig how strong you are OTE.ranger wrote:

Mike obviously has great technique, as is obvious if you watch him OTW. That is why he is a Champion hwt and lwt sculler of the USA.

Actually, the Wiki photo shows a 2x with a bow ball, so that someone who was really picky (Who? Me? Why would you think that?) could argue that the bow was less pointy than the stern. In defense of sweeps, there are very few moments that match the sweet feel of a well coordinated 8 when it reaches that point where it sings through the water. I can't think of any other way to describe it. But it has been a long, long time since I have felt that.

It's too damn bad that the bigwigs at FISA, for whatever reason, banned the gooney rig. It just about eliminated bow bounce. At least that is one thing that the Virus (with a capitol "V" and pronounced "vee-rus") has going for it. It is also too bad that here is not enough interest for them to market a competition version.
