Nice 10K OTW in my Fluid, just after dawn, out on a _totally_ becalmed Lake Michigan, after 10K OTErg, just before dawn.

Glass.

Revved it up to 1:45 a couple of times--no problem.

At 8 SPI, 1:45 comes along at 37.5 spm.

At 15 seconds over erg times, that's the equivalent of 1:30 @ 37.5 OTErg, a neat 12.8 SPI.

Today is the deadline to register for the Ann Arbor regatta. That would be on a river familiar to our hero. I assume he would have a place to stay if he didn't want to travel and race in the same day.

Cue for the usual : other plans with family, first need to do a 6:16 2K on the erg (a variation on I can't walk and chew gum at the same time), need to habituate my perfect OTW stroke first, ...

* yet another (weak) blog-like post indicating nothing in particular.
Why do continue to ignore polite requests (such as Paul's) for a time with a distance... as an IND_V or a screen shot? What do you have to hide?

"10K OTErg, just before dawn" took how long? It's on your PM4. You don't report it. Why?

You still haven't replied to repeated inquires about whether you've gone on line and entered the lottery for the HOCR. What the problem there?

I wonder whether I can do 38 spm OTW for the 135 strokes that it takes to do a 1K.

I'll have to give it a go.

I think I can do it OTErg.

What is the best that a 60-year-old has ever done for 1K OTW?

OTW, Mike VB has done 1:50 for 1K, but that was at 58 years old, and even so, I sure that that is a _long_ way from the best at that age.

Mike only rated 34 spm and fell well short of 8 SPI.

Nope, not yet.

I was waiting to see how my injury was doing.

Since it is better, I'll enter soon.

The deadline is still a couple of weeks away.

Spring break at UM is the Tuesday before HOCR.

If I cancel classes on Thursday, I can drive my Fluid out to Boston on Friday, the 14th, the week before break, and spend 10 days before HOCR rowing the course, over and over.

That will help.

My nephew and his wife live in Boston.

I can just camp out with them.

They have a new baby, but perhaps I can just park my van in their driveway and sleep there, so I won't bother them.

Heck, I'll just be on the river all day, day after day, anyway.

I'll also see whether I can line up a full schedule of head races in and around Ann Arbor every weekend in September and early October.

If I can do five or six head races before the HOCR, just to see the sort of pace I can hold for 5K on a twisting, unfamiliar course, that will also help.

Of course, I can also get in a lot of 5Ks up here in Door County, out on the big lake, over the next six weeks, before I go back to Ann Arbor.

A nice drill for me OTW is just to do good catches and finishes, with good countermotion against my back, without swinging my back at all.

As it turns out, I do a nice 2:10 @ 25 spm when I do this rowing without my back, just arms and legs.

Then when I swing my back in between, I go _much_ faster than that.

Only five boats in the veterans (60+) race at the Head of the Charles did 2:10 pace for 3 miles.

When I am fully trained up for it, OTW, I think I can rate 30 spm for 3 miles, as I can OTErg.

Funny time to have "Spring Break", October.... :?
Of course, you are the master of "breaks" so I should probably defer to you! :P

BTW: I sent the following to you UM email address:

"Rich:
Why not subscribe to the Eliot Enclosure?
Thought I'd send this along to you. (It's the premium place to watch the race)
Since you (most probably)won't be in this year's race, at least you could watch it in comfort.
Perhaps you could hold forth about sculling and SPI... Do you think anyone would listen?

~ regards,
Mike

Shades of last year: esp: the " 10 days, over and over " You were going to do that prior to your splash-down at the Head of the Grand...

As for Boston, the ranger October/Spring Break
See you there, maybe Thursday before the race.
Have fun sightseeing on the river.

Pierce of advice: You can't take the corners and go through the arches in practice. The river observes a right hand traffic pattern on all days except regatta Sat. & Sun....

Hi Prof. Just calling in to see if you've figured out a way to take your intended FM pace past the 5k mark yet?

I see you haven't.

Ah well.

So it goes....

Awesome! I can't wait. It will help me see exactly what I need to do to get to 7:02.3.

But you won't, will you, because you are a liar.

Naw.

If I can't get in, I won't go.

I don't have much interest in just watching.

Sure, I might not be selected in the lottery.

If not, no worry.

All I can do is try.

I can still go to the head races in and around Ann Arbor in September and October.
