nanagi, just worry less about others. Do the right thing. Train hard, eat right, have fun! Do not validate yourself by comparing yourself. Don't worry about your times being OK.
Thanks for saying that AnimalNige - just what I was thinking. Don't really understand all the other stuff either.
Good luck Nanagi you will do just great.

Learn to row too, otherwise it's no fun at all. That's the only way to get into a fast boat.

I understand all the feelgood comments guys, but lets be realistic. Nanaagi is competing against her peers for a place on a team which requires individual effort and result. A result that has to be better than others for ideal selection. Teamwork will be what comes later. Naturally things have to be fun as well or its not worthwhile. Winning just happens to be a little more fun than losing. Not to mention a great motivator
Very surprised at your comment Nige, given both your competitive nature and constant updates on your performances....validation even...
Seeking comparison of ones performance is done everyday across a wide range of activities and I dare say there is no one on this forum that hasn't done it. Everyone is trying to go forward and monitoring and assessing performances is how we gauge our efforts. To dismiss this is not only ludicrous but misleading to a competitor with any form of ambition. Even 14 year old girls can have goals that extend beyond simply enjoying the company of others in her chosen firld. As mentioned...the selections upset a few of the other competitors....I guess they weren't "just happy to be there"
Most of us are old men who enjoy rowing....and I would be happy to row with any of you. But make no mistake...I will try to beat you...I guess its in my nature.

Bad form to undermine the kid's coach--bottom line! Save that for Monday morning in Philly. Jack

Yeah, but I'm crazy. You don't want to be like me. Happiness is more important.

I don't remember my coach ever telling anyone that he was doing well or poorly. The only measure of success (no ergs in those days) was his calling out the names for the boatings before we took the shells to the water. Being in the varsity or JV boat was praise enough. Being in the 6th boat was a clear indication that you had a lot of work to do. Not that those of us in the varsity and JV could ease off. We knew that we had to row our butts off to keep our seats (contradictory as that may sound).
I don't know what my old coach would have thought of the ergs. What counted for him was how well you made the boat go in the water and that included syncing well with the other members of the crew. There were no stars. For him it worked; he took 3 college 8s to olympic gold ('28, '32, and '48).
