I agree with you regarding not using heart rates to direct training. Actually I think when I was first learning about training and I was reading lots of things, you're the one I most specifically remember advocating not using heart rate monitoring to direct training. I believe your ideas are nicely summarized in the Wolverine Plan document which I've read.
Part of the problem is the multitude of things that can effect heart rate that are unrelated to training intensity. I like the way you emphasize performing specific workloads in a very precise manner like stroke rate and number of strokes etc. The emphasis is on performance and not on what's happening "under the hood" or "in the black box".
When it's time to perform in a race, the performance of certain training tasks is key.
