Well done for getting the erg and making a start. Hopefully it'll be something you do for the rest of your life so no need to take on the world any time soon. Lots of good advice already presented. The only other thing that struck me to add would be to mix in some variety. There's a lot of sense in concentrating on form, getting the stroke right, and gradually building up time/distance. But that all sounds a bit samey and may get boring. Once or twice a week I'd suggest doing some intervals - maybe sprints: 1 min erg 1 min rest x10 or maybe 500m with 2 min rests x6 or similar; maybe longer intervals: 1k, or 1500m on 4 or 5 min rests x4. You can attack these much harder than your other training and fast and furious can be fun!

(While I think about it, those pieces mentioned would normally be written 10x 1min 1r; 6x 500m 2r; 4x1k 5r; 4x1500m 5r - and if there's a specified stroke rate then that will be added as r30 or whatever. Hopefully that will help understand what others write up in their posts)
