I too picked up with the erg (again) after a 10 year lay off from exercise in May 2020 during LD

I followed a training plan which emphasised that you can only train as hard as your body can recover, don't be afraid to add in extra rest days if your body needs it, you wont improve, and may get injured, if you train when you should be resting.
