100m open world record set by 57 year old Leo Young
Re: 100m open world record set by 57 year old Leo Young
iirc given the limitations of the monitor on the Model B, Leo, during his record attempt, was not able to go below 1.08 (I think) without the thing going nuts; he had to restrain himself during those initial strokes. As you and I well know Jack, quite easy to hit 1.07 and lower when the blood is up at the start of a short piece.

Gary, a single stroke @ 1:38 is terra incognita to lil old me! What nature abhors, Leo adores?

Yep, seems to have backfired. I feel a bit dumb for not realising it was rubbish straight away. I figured the guy who holds the 500m WR would (a) not fake something like this and (b) might have been able to beat the WR.RWAGR wrote:Instagram post now appears to have been removed

You got company...I got sucked in too. His 500 WR is legendary and we're seeing lots of guys who won the genetic lottery fail at breaking it...makes you wonder why he would create a stunt like this.JerekKruger wrote:Yep, seems to have backfired. To be fair, this makes me suspicious even about that 1:10.5 500m piece.

I had the same thought, but there was a Concept 2 approved witness (and plenty of other) and there was a video (since been lost) so I think it's probably legit.ItalianRower wrote:To be fair, this makes me suspicious even about that 1:10.5 500m piece.

That was done with 500 plus people watching.......... 100% legit.ItalianRower wrote:To be fair, this makes me suspicious even about that 1:10.5 500m piece.
Guys come on, if you really though sub 1.00 is possible at rate 33....
The strongest man in the world needed almost rate 60 to get the current record. Rate 33 1.00 is like a 800 kg deadlift or a 7.00 100m meter or a 500 kg bench
It was a poorly executed april 1 joke.

All rather odd, certainly. A joke, perhaps, yet without the slightest hint of comedy. Just weirdness. And glossy equipment.
Still, we may be sure that Leo remains a formidable athlete. In another post he mentions deadlifting 507lbs for 20 reps and 400lbs for 50 reps.

There are no videos, it was before the current foon time. Those results are from Leo himself in the buildup to his 500 attempt. Which he did for a big crowd, not on his own.JMac wrote:Any video?GJS wrote:Still, we may be sure that Leo remains a formidable athlete. He is not doing himself a favor with these pranks
Btw, his record is on the verge of being broken. A guy is going for it. Strongman type, improving still rapidly, 1.11.0 already pulled. Big guy but still athletic enough to be able to erg.

Those deadlifts are recent, Henry.
Gotta link for this 500m chap, please? It seems you think he has more potential than Phil Clapp? After I set my 500m record 27 years ago, I was unable to deadlift again for over 25 years, with an injured back as a result of all the totally insane extreme training I did leading up to the record attempt. But at the age of 56, after exclusively training the sensational deadlift movement on the Power Tower, followed up with just three deadlift familiarisation training sessions, I was able, at a body weight of of only 98kg (215lb), to deadlift 230kg (507 lb) for 20 reps and 182kg (400 lb) for 50 reps, all touch and go, with no pauses.

I have the feeling Phil C. is not overly serious, he often goes off and stops training. He also does not look very trained, think he has bizar potential. If he trained for it I think he could pull every row record. Not at the same time, but either strenght for short or endurance for 2k.
With 2.06 he still is athletic, pretty rare.
