Joefish, I can't, no matter what I do, lower my stroke rate lower than 26spm and 28spm is my sweet spot so don't worry about 24spm. 24 would still feel too slow to me. Don't be so hard on yourself I bet in a month's time you will see notable improvements in weight and fitness.
Anth, I do enjoy my sessions but I only do longer endurance sessions and I've got used to being comfortable with being uncomfortable. I agree that a 2k or 5k race is utterly hellish though
