Another day another pb

put in a rather cheeky 2:07 pacer fully expecting to crash and burn; but figured I'd still fly miles better than the 2:13.8 r20 pb from last year...

at 4500m; I thought I'd bitten off more than I could chew and my legs were starting to feel a bit of burn; but I backed off a little and dug in.
Mentally took myself deep into the pain cave 6k onwards - and worked through the stich I'd panic'd myself into by resetting my breathing & dialling out the chimp by focusing on my music and my rhythm only - then started meter watching 9ish, at a time....

Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M
42:13.1 10,000m 2:06.6 172 892 25 171
5:17.1 1,250m 2:06.8 172 890 25 155
5:17.0 2,500m 2:06.8 172 890 26 165
5:16.3 3,750m 2:06.5 173 894 25 170
5:18.1 5,000m 2:07.2 170 884 25 170
5:19.5 6,250m 2:07.8 168 877 25 175

5:10.8 10,000m 2:04.3 182 926 25 181

24th percentile up to 43rd.... and sadly Pauls law now says everything bar my 500m is below par (in fact my 10k pace is now better than both 6k & 30min)

On Saturday morning I set a target of maintaining a sub-2-minute pace per 500 meters on the SkiErg over a half marathon distance. Based on previous 10/12k's and a 60-minute session at this pace I was fairly confident that with proper pacing, hydration and nutrition I could do it.

I set the splits at 7033 meters with a target power of 205watts. Throughout the first 2 splits I did not exceed my set pace and despite a few wobbles and stupid thoughts I managed to stay on track. As I approached the final 500 meters the monitors projected finish time was 1:24.10 so I decided to sprint the last 300 meters, aiming to break the 84-minute mark. By maintaining a 1:42 / 1:43 split I narrowly managed to sneak it with a finish time of 1:23:59.6

Absolutely flying mate, good job :D I don't remember if you mentioned your max HR, but if it is almost like mine(high 180's, since we are only a couple of months apart) I suspect you might have even more in you, and your last split(dropping down two splits) also suggests this. Bet that 36 rating on the last 500 made your legs shaky though? B) Superb "new" PB, and good execution with first and last being the fastest!

That's a great result, especially to have dropped the projected finish time by that much with 300m to go. I know how hard that is on a rower, so I'm guessing that a skierg is a lot harder

Disappointing 60 min PB for me today. I suppose a PB by 141 meters is solid enough (especially as it was a recent PB from last month), but I'm irritated not to have broken 16,000. I blew up attempting this on Saturday when I was ahead of 1.52.5 pace with 20 min to go before HD'ing, so today I tried to be more conservative. I still couldn't hold the split in the 1.52's in the back half, but had good enough mental resilience to settle for a 15,900's result even once I knew my final push wouldn't get me to 16,000. Hopefully next season I can get there.

That is a huge PB, and should be celebrated, even though you barely missed 16k. Big contratulations :D Next time you will surely surpass it. Did you ever try another pacing strategy? I have always loved doing negative splits, as I can go through the halfway mark feeling less fatigued, and be able to really push on the last few splits. I see you also did a big leap in pace on the last one. I often split the hour into 7:30, and on the first split I aim for about 1:54.5, and then I start digging more and more. Could be worth a shot, but I can only assume next time you will do it no matter what!
