I have been rowing since Nov 7, 2011 and today I made my second attempt at a 1k TT. My time was 3:06.6 r38 drag 135. Next Saturday I have my first competition and am hoping to pull 1:39 without flying and dying.
Also, two days ago I did another pb: 500m in 1:28.4 r44 drag 134.
Age 50.

Very impressive. I bet there's a lot more to come since you've only been at this a couple of months.
Do you have a background in other sports?

Thanks, gregsmith01748. I recently updated my ranking profile as follows:
"In the early 90s I sat on a rowing machine at the gym; that week I rowed two or three times. Later in the 2000s I happened to read a book by bodybuilder Clarence Bass wherein he described the Concept2 competitions and rankings. These thoughts stayed in my mind and eventually bore fruit. My Concept2E arrived Nov 7, 2011 and now I'm an erger. I've been a lifetime fitness enthusiast and enjoy trying new things to stay motivated to exercise. I've done marathons, triathlons (including Ironman), but am a better cyclist. Ht=6' Wt=200lbs."
I don't know how motivated I'll be to keep pursuing erg goals beyond 2k @ 6:29.9. What I have is cardiovascular fitness. What I lack is strength (relatively speaking, that is).

Clarence Bass is certainly very knowledgeable about body building and I think that it is great that he recommends using the Concept 2 indoor rower, but, by all means, don't emulate his rowing style. It is amazing and a tribute to his all around conditioning that he ranked so high, but I am sure that he would rank much higher if he learned even a little bit about proper technique.

Hi Bob S.
I've never seen Clarence Bass row (I take it that is a good thing). I referenced him just to mention how the idea of erging was planted into my mind. His book that I was reading was about dieting for bodybuilding. His main contribution to the subject was what he called "uniform eating."

At one time someone posted a link here of a video of him on a C2. His physique was superb, of course, but I was shocked by his rowing form.

I pulled 1:39.2 r34 in my first indoor competition (San Diego Indoor Classic). All my splits were about even. I did not fly and die but had no gas left in the tank. I used a drag factor of 135.
After my race a few people commented that my rating was high, although they did not suggest that I lower it. The first half I rated at 34 but the second half I lost track. I think it was consistent, or at least my splits were.
PS this is an unofficial time because the times are not posted. I saw 1:39.2 on the monitor.

Great job Hansink! Ibet you'll be faster than 6:30 soon,
Awesome row, sander. I read your blog about it. I'm glad your kids were cheering you on.
Big PB for me yesterday. I rowed at the Cranberry Crunch on Cape Cod and shaved 3.5 sec off my old PB.
New PB: 2000, 6:36.0

Hello! I have owned a D1 for several years, but only used it in "Crossfit" combination-style workouts in the past. Last June, I had a serious bout of pneumonia and decided to use the rower to help me regain more cardiovascular fitness. I just learned about drag factor and how to evaluate one's stroke rate, etc. a few weeks ago, so I'm steep into the learning curve! I've found this forum to be a great training resource and am grateful for the members who provide solid information. I've put up some decent times on some short rows, but don't have my form (or endurance!) sorted out well enough for the longer stuff yet, as I'm still recovering. I've rowed the 500m three times now for time, and the posted 1000m time is my first attempt. I hope to be able to improve with more focused work, as well as learning from the giants here.
Thanks,
Lee

In the Long Beach Indoor Sprints (Feb 4, 2012) I rowed a pb 2k in 6:34.5 r34.
Since there are only two competitions per year in the southwest USA, my season is about over. So now I'll take a more long-term approach to my training and hope to return next year.

Thanks, Lee. Based on your 500m time, I'd say you have great potential for improvement. I look forward to following your pb's.

Well done. That is a pace of 1:55.8, great for a 10K. I'm doing 30's at 1:56.8, so hope to be doing the 10K at your pace soon. Also my stroke rate is like 26... Cheers
