As I said, I will be ready to race OTW when I have a good idea of my times for 10K, 6K, 5K, 2K, 1K, 500m, etc., and am doing regular interval workouts (500s, 1Ks, etc.).
I am not ready to that point yet in my OTW training, but I should be by fall.
I have only had my Fluid a few days.
When I start racing, head races will come first, then sprints.
I will enter a full round of head races in September and October.
Then I will enter some sprint races next spring.
Then, next fall, I will try to enter the Head of the Charles.

Thanks for wishing me good luck. "good luck" to you, too, Rich!ranger wrote:mikvan52 wrote:I guess I'll just tool along in my single and forget the erg
Good luck with it.
At the moment, you are stuck, as we 60s lwts all are, at about a 18 second per 500m difference between your erg times and your times OTW.
Perhaps fiddling with technique can get you a few tenths of a second over 5K--here and there--if you spend 100% of your time OTW, and don't do anything else.
At the same time, your physical capacity will be declining at about a half a second per 500m per year.
And Spousta and Dietz will also have close to 50 seconds in handicap time over 3 miles that you will need to overcome to win HOTC after you turn 60.
It still remains that I have no idea where you come up with such zingers as "Perhaps fiddling with technique can get you a few tenths of a second over 5K--here and there--if you spend 100% of your time OTW, and don't do anything else."
If this is true...
How come I beat Stan Vegar at the HOCR... He's 30 seconds faster than me on the erg at 2k... Please explain... I think I beat him at the 2007 HOCR by at least 15 seconds...
Please explain this discrepancy.

I'm sorry... I should edit this mistake. I just looked it up again. I didn't beat him by 15 seconds.mikvan52 wrote: Stan Vegar at the HOCR... He's 30 seconds faster than me on the erg at 2k... Please explain... I think I beat him at the 2007 HOCR by at least 15 seconds...
I beat him by 30 seconds.
At the time I was a 6:47 erg at 2k
Stan Vegar was... (I'll have to look it up)
Here it is:
1 Stan Vegar 52 San Diego CA USA 6:17.4 RACE

Not sure what Stan weighs, but I suspect 220 lbs.mikvan52 wrote:How come I beat Stan Vegar at the HOCR... He's 30 seconds faster than me on the erg at 2k
So.
If you weigh 158 lbs., Stan might be as much as 62 pounds heavier than you.
62 lbs. is 28.2 kgs.
OTW, each kg. slows you down about a second over 2K, 2.5 seconds over 5K.
Over 5K, that gives you a weight advantage of 1:10.5, 70.5 seconds.
Stan does about 6:20 on the erg for 2K.
So, adjusted for weight, that is 6:48.2, just a tad slower than you.
I'm don't know what Stan does for 5K on the erg, but his endurance might not be as good as his power.
So this could also be an explanation.
There is no evidence at all that you row better OTW than Stan, none at all.

Re: Ranger's training thread
that's absolutely hysterical! Mike vB and Dietz, and Spousta don't row any better than you??? Three athletes, with multiple national team jerseys, a couple of Olympics, and too many national championships to count? You, a guy who admits he has myriad technical flaws, who has never even entered an OTW race, much less finished one, and therefore hasn't even got a bronze medal from the women's over 90 Ann Arbor Annual regatta?ranger wrote:

You are better than Mike Deitz and Spousta?
Your sculling - as proven by video - sucks.
Like a hoover on steroids.
Actually, more like a black hole engulfing a solar system.
You're a bow-burying, stern-checking, slide-rushing, head-snapping, short-reaching, finish-frothing, catch-missing, tail-shooting, handle-yanking gerbil. And a lying sack of crap to boot.
i'd like to personally tell you what a horse's ass you are. Except I like horses too much.

Nice 13K OTW today after 10K on the erg.
Dang that Fluid is fast!
I still need to push both of these sessions to 20K.

There Is no point in trying to discuss anything with you.
I'll stick with my delusion that beating Stan by 30 seconds at the 2007 HOCR is significant in showing that I'm a better rower than he is (not erger...++===> ROWER)
You're a riot, Rich!

Re: Ranger's training thread
ranger you are a moron of the first order. you are so dumb that you don't know that the reason bigger people (heavyweights) consistently beat lighter people (lightweights) is because bigger people have much greater oxygen carrying capacity, and the effect of their weight is minimized as rowing is not a weight bearing exercise like cycling or running.ranger wrote:Not sure what Stan weighs, but I suspect 220 lbs.mikvan52 wrote:How come I beat Stan Vegar at the HOCR... Bigger is faster, you idiot. that's why world champions in the heavy 1x, and 2x, and 4- and 8 have faster times than lightweights.
christ. you'd lose a chess match to my great dane. And she's really dumb.

Re: Ranger's training thread
Mike - FYI, I was almost ten seconds faster in Narrangansett than a true gentleman (Ernie Parizeau) who beat me by almost nine seconds at CRASH-Bs. Of course, there was a wake, and I've gotten some excellent coaching..things that make a bit of a difference OTW.
Can't wait to see de-ranger on the race course. Alas, it isn't ever going to happen...

Spousta weighs about 195 lbs.and does a 2K on the erg at about 6:36/1:39.
So, adjusted for weight, that's a 6:52, just a tad slower than Mike VB at WIRC 2010.
If I pull a lwt 6:16 on the erg next year, as I think I will, I will beat that time by 36 seconds, nine seconds per 500m.
If I pull a lwt 6:20, I will beat that time by eight seconds per 500m
If I pull a lwt 6:24, I will beat that time by seven seconds per 500m.
If I pull a lwt pb, 6:28, I will beat that time by six seconds per 500m.
etc.
