the virtual race software definitely adds another dimension to it - you get counted down from 10 and then go on the Go! so your final time has your reaction time added to what you would normally row in a time trial
my plan was fast 10 strokes, then settle in and go through half way in 1.34.5 and that's exactly what I did. Huge amount of chest pain from 400 onwards but it didn't get any worse (or much worse anyway) and I managed to keep my pace pretty well. the second half I definitely slowed - second 500 was 1.35.3 but I held my speed better than the others. I was coming 5th at 400 and 3rd at half way, got to second place with 200 to go and ended up coming second by 8m.
really happy with the PB and (hopefully) the medal after the broken foot 8 weeks ago and the virus earlier in the week. definitely the right decision not to row the 2k
relieved it's over and I'm gonna have a big drink today (and probably tomorrow)
thank you all for your support and encouragement

Fully with you on the nerves - it's not unusual for me to wake in the night with nerves before I do a TT. Ridiculous really, as we don't have to answer to anyone but ourselves.
500m TT soon? If you felt sick here, a flat out 500m might be a bit ugly.
Anyway, a great improvement and good luck with that additional 11m. 350 is a great target.
A 500 is on the cards, I'm going to build to a 400m first holding 1.29 then 450 then 500.
Thanks Autoland, just glad to have finally done it.
Cheers martin, I am sure now I can do a 500m under 1.30 with more training.MartinSH4321 wrote: ↑October 30th, 2021, 3:03 amWell done, that's a big improvement! Weights and sprint work are key for these short sprints

I have been working on sprint starts, 6x20sec 20r intervals and have shifted to a 5x5 weight regime. I can really feel the difference all over.
I started really well and settled in after 100m. I went from 1.25 ave to 1.27.5 but mid way I got a little too relaxed and slipped to 1.29 but I brought it back to 1.28 ish and finished well.
The funny thing with this was a couple of days ago I got that feeling when you know you feel good. I decided today at about 3 pm to do it in an hours time and literally 1 minute later Mr negative appeared in my head.
I carried on anyway getting ready and sat on the erg, did my warm ups and I was getting worse and worse so I just thought right you wont win and went and got a bowl put it on a chair next to the rower and said to my self I am going all out and will puke in that if I have to from the effort. Well the brain could not argue with that and it went quiet.
This places me in the top 10th percentile in the world overall and 17th place in Britain for my age bracket, very happy with that.

Even without the issues you've faced that's a great result. The recent virus will really taken a chunk out of you, along with a racing start slowing you down a bit too, so I think you can knock off 2 or 3 more seconds, and hopefully a bit more.aussie nick wrote: ↑October 29th, 2021, 10:56 pmnew 1k PR 3.09.8 at sr 34, 1.34.9/500 a PR by 2.3 seconds

Max....re chest pain...I chose the wrong description. it was just tightness in breathing you get when you're at/close to the redline.
