HM pb today in 1:20:23.2/r22. Also set unofficial 60 minute pb with about 15,750m  Unfortunately my pb is now close enough to 1:20 that I'm going to have to do it again soon.

@aharmer: great job on the PB, you beat me by a minute and half, I'll have to get serious about getting back to top HM form. That's a great time! How much faster did you go than you last PB?

Thanks Greg. Beat the last one by about 2 minutes. I knew that one wasn't a full effort that's why I tried it again so soon. It's fun to have someone equal in ability to compete with. It's your turn, take it down below 1:20 and I'll have to match you. Don't do it too soon though, my butt needs time to recover!

My PB is currently 1:21:50, so I have a pretty big stretch to get there. And the last couple of times I've tried to do HMs, I went out at 1:55 and the wheels came off around the one hour mark. I think I have some work to do just to get back to my previous PB.

I'm up for a challenge, but I think you'll have plenty of time to heal.

I was watching videos of Rob Smith rowing his short distance records, and I realized he does not take a full stroke, but instead barely uses his legs and does a half stroke and uses mostly his back. I tried this and knocked a second off my PB for 250m - 38.0 seconds. My spm went up to over 50 strokes per minute, and I felt much more comfortable on the seat. I do not know if this style works for a 500m row, (I know it is not good above that) but I will try it when I test my 500m next weekend. I also lowered my LP to 1:12.

Great time! Worth doing those long rows, because that's what keeps you alive in the last 500m of any race! The PB bug has sunk its teeth into me too: My last HM, my heart rate didn't ride up, and I was within about 30 seconds of 3rd place in my age group, and now I'm eyeing another try, even though I probably can stay Top 10 for a couple of months while I train for the CRASH-Bs... Sorry Shakespeare: "Training or PB-chasing, THAT is the question!"

Hey, Brad, you discovered the Dirty Little Secret of sprinting on your erg: You have to spin your flywheel fast... then catch the flywheel in mid-spin and speed it up even more... then catch it in mid-spin to speed it up even more. When you get past your anaerobic threshold, you hold on for dear life.
So, all those guys can write about staying below 25spm, and trying for 12.6mps, etc. - but a sprint is raw power, racing against lactic acid build-up (and usually closer to 9mps).
On the other hand, you don't want to do this too often, or you can injure your back, shoulders or elbows which are getting a good jolt when you catch the wheel in mid-spin...

Here's my brag for the day: Raced twice (20:00, 6K) on RowPro against a field of studs (13 rowers in the 1st race, 10-11 in the 2nd) with only a few minutes rest between the two, and came in 1st in both contests (5,581m/20:00, 6K/22:01.5)!
Yes, I know different people join these online rows at different points in their training, and to accomplish different things, but... it was no cakewalk. In each one, I had two top rowers nipping at my heels, and I had to do a few sprints to shake them off at the end.
P.S. In the 20:00, I passed the 5K mark in 17:58.6, which I would consider a PB if it was a separate row (18:01.2/5K is my official PB)!

I've lost more than 120 pounds this year by erging like a lunatic, and although PBs are still frequent for me, this month has been pretty darn good:
12/1/10--5000m--18:18
12/6/10--6000m--22:04.4
12/8/10--2000m--6:58.6
12/9/10--30min--8,045m

Working up to a 10K.

30:00/r23
8164m

Previous pb 8113m. Have decided to do a weekly "tempo" piece of 30:00 at about 71-72% of 2k watts. Similar to the hard distance piece in PP. Noticed about halfway through that I was pretty close to my old pb. Couldn't resist, had to push the split down just a bit to notch a pb. Need to resist the urge to do it every time.

10000m, 37:50.3
Eclipsed my previous best 10K by more than 40 seconds, although I pulled that one more than 17 years ago in 1993.

I posted this in the "what training have you done today" thread as well but since it was a PB I figured it should go here too.

I set out to do my 1st 2k test today so I will have a baseline for training.
After a 25 minute warm-up I was ready to go.

Here are the details:

1st 500 1:48.7 31spm
2nd 500 1:53.0 30spm
3rd 500 1:56.9 30spm
4th 500 1:54.4 31spm

Total 7:33.1
Avg split 1:53.3

All in all not too bad. I need to pace myself better as I think I went out too hard & struggled in the middle. I've only had my erg for a week so I'm still getting used to it. I definitely need to do more anaerobic training but overall I'm happy with the result.
