Whenever I row for longer pieces my model D has a tendency to creep backwards, as much as half an erg's length depending on how long I am pulling for. I was wondering if anyone had some insight into this problem.
Note, when I pull 2ks or shorter pieces, my erg will more often than not move forward slightly.

Hmm...I didn't think this "symptom" even existed lol. Our team has always had trouble with people rushing the catch, resulting in the erg moving forward feet during a piece...it would seem in order to do the reverse your ratio during the longer pieces is allowing you to really wail on the chain post-catch causing the erg to actually shift backwards due to the amount of push at the catch. I personally haven't noticed others due it but a few inches...but I guess anything is possible.
Might be some other cause, but if rushing the catch causes it to slide forward (ignoring a slippery floor etc) then the opposite would be "non-rushing of the catch" lol. Which could explain why on the 2k it moves slightly forward because for a shorter piece to some extent you have sacrificed the ease and ratio that you would hold during an extended row.

Sliding forward is probably more frequent, but I've seen people sliding back as well. I don't know what your floor is, but if you can drill into it, you can always mount wood blocks behind your machine. Otherwise, get a fitness mat of some sort placed under your machine, it should help get a grip if you're ona hard surface.

Sliding backwards is caused by having your feet in the straps and rushing the recovery: you are trying to pull yourself towards the catch, but (action is reaction) you are also pulling the erg towards yourself -> it will slide backwards.psucrewcronin wrote:Whenever I row for longer pieces my model D has a tendency to creep backwards, as much as half an erg's length depending on how long I am pulling for. Like Dougie suggests: try rowing strapless for a while.

I don't remember where I read this (somewhere on the UK forum), but someone crashed an erg this way. He or she mounted a piece of wood behind the erg (at floor level), and after some time the continuous pressure was too much for the poor thing.fcorbin wrote: you can always mount wood blocks behind your machine.
