I think it's be fun to row with a bona fide gold medal winner.[/quote]
Especially if you let him do all the pulling. Then you can have a nice cruise around Newport Bay.
I can't even imagine how difficult it must be to run your own appellate practice. Congratulations. My firm has an office in near you and Xeno -- in Costa Mesa. Sometimes I work with a very nice, super smart, lawyer there named Joe Chairaz.

Hi, since I haven't gotten to speak with Xeno, I was wondering how much of December's workout you can share? I'd love some idea of a) what the goal is for the training (2K late Feb indoor erg? 2K sprint season on water? other?) and b) what a typical week is for a participant.
Are these tailored to individual needs or is there a general subscription/workout for all?
Many thanks. I'm quite curious.
Today is a mandatory rest day for me, and I am cranky about it!!!![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

Today's workout was a 20-minute warm-up piece. Then we did 3x20-minute rating pyramids. The goal was 20K for the session (including warm-up).
Xeno also suggests that we do a second row when possible. For this workout, he advocates a 70- or 80-minute steady state. So tonight I did 70-minute piece. I went 18,806M (1:51.7 avg.).
The goal is a peak 2K in February and August. The weeks vary. Usually the first two are distance pieces; the third is transitioning to power; the fourth is sharpening for the month-ending 2K. So each month is a micro-cycle within the season-long macro-cycle.
You'll love it.

OK, I have finally met my match! I erg a lot, and am teased relentlessly for not having enough of a life outside of my PM3 card, but you take the prize, man!
I can't even imagine rowing 70 minutes at 1:51 splits. You are a machine! I am a 45 year old HWT female who would love to row a 7:20 and medal at the CRASH Bs this year (bronze last year was 727.4). I tested on Thanksgiving right at what took bronze last year and have more work to do to bring it down b/c I am sure there are some last year's 39 year olds who will be rowing in the BIG (too big in my opinion) 40-49 age category. I am wondering what it would feel like to row 70 minutes at a faster pace than I can row 2K. Geeeez.
That said, Xeno clearly lets know grass grow under your feet. That is cool. I love to train. I hope he gets in touch with me.
How old are you rowing with that kind of power? And all this with a recovering back.
AWESOME. Keep it up. You'll reach whatever goals you have with this kind of discipline.

40-49 is too big a group. My category (30-39) is the same way. Because it uses five-year categories instead of ten, the BIRC is much more civilized.
I'm 36-years old, 6'2" and 167lbs. Even though they are actually absolute numbers, erg splits are still all relative. Thanks for the comment, though. I was pleased with the row. I was due for a good one because I struggled in the second half of this week.

I am so lame I wrote to the CRASH B people and politely asked if they'd considered going with the more reasonable and equitable age categories of BIRC. The woman who wrote back was quite nice about it, and said that they had actually talked about it in their board meetings, but decided to leave it as is. Too darned bad. I think there is a 39 year old or 2 from 2007's race that will be sitting in my field.
My husband says I will just have to work that much harder. He's right.
But after a groin injury (he's a runner), he's been cozying up to my erg 6 x week to keep up his cardio until he heals, and I think I see the sparkle of a competitive eye when he holds the handle. We'll see.
In any case, you have the perfect build to be great on the erg. Actually, I do, too. I am 5'12" tall and no one would mistake me for a ballerina
My backup plan is to keep training until I can hit the 50 age group and go for the hammer! Wouldn't that be cool.
Happy training,
Deborah

Hi Deborah
Its been a great to read your recent posts and to see how excited you are about this! I am sure you will exceed your 2k goal this year.
I haven't really put much effort into 2k racing myself in the past few years. I've raced locally most years, but its been more of something to do the first Sunday in February than anything Reading your posts has reminded me of how much fun Crash B's can be and will perhaps motivate me into working on a decent 2k time this year.
Who knows, maybe I will see you and Carla in Boston.

Hi, Cynthia
I gather you are a veteran 2K racer. Where do you live? Are you in my age group?
Carla Stein is some kind of inspiration, I have to tell you. I first started erging seriously a year ago, and it didn't take long before someone told me about the CRASH B, and I saw those times. Wow. Six months ago my 2K time was a whopping 28 seconds slower than it was this Thanksgiving, so I am keepin' on keepin' on with the training and hoping for the best. I figure at a minimum I'll get into to shape.
Do you row on the water, too?
I did an informal 2500m sculling race today at my club, and it is humbling to be so slow in a single. Thankfully I can redeem my spirits with an erg workout! One of the women there was a former Olympic rower, and it's great to see her still going strong at 50+. Now I am resting up for my final IP workout of the week. I think my time in a single would be more appropriately referred to as a mental exercise in remaining calm and dry than a workout!
I'd love to know more about where you row and how you're training. When did you do the CRASH Bs? What was it like?

OK: You guys are motivating me to go to Boston. And my wife is on board. We'll go for dinner thar Friday night with her Mass General friends (I'll be the one eating air).
It's great to read about your progress and passion for this. It's contagious.
Today was the Sunday long row. I did a 2-hour piece: 30,954 meters(1:56.3 average). I had about 45 seconds or a minute with splits above 3 minutes while my wife taped a cut on my finger that just would not stop bleedng during the piece.
I'm excited that we're using this thread to keep driving each other toward PRs in Boston. Or in Deborah's and Cynthia's case, inexorably toward The Hammer.
Let's hope we all have a great week! Let's go!

Oh, what kind of mess am I getting myself into, now I have to go for the Hammer? I'm not even sure yet if I'm committing to working on a PB!
Deborah, as you gain experience and technique in the 1x, your times will improve dramatically, My experience is that it takes a season or two of racing the 1x before you can get comfortable. In answer to your questions, I am 45yrs old, went to Crash-B's in 2003 and 2004 and yes I do row on the water. The erg is just an evil means to get through the winter.

I think instead of the CRASH B I should plan a vacation to some tropical island because no amount of training is going to get me to the kind of times you pulled when you took those medals. Wow!
Or Cynthia, perhaps I should send you, Carla, and Tracy Axten on some wonderful vacation so that I have a stinking chance to come in anywhere in the top quarter.
I think I better go erg and stop thinking about how fast I might be if a) I had started rowing more than 15 months ago; and b) if I trained as much as I think about how much I want to improve.
<Gulp repeated> And I thought that Thanksgiving 2K time was something to be thankful for. I had no idea!!!
Maybe that sculling idea isn't a bad one...
Humble pie for dinner here,
Deborah
p.s. Boston's really cold in February, Cynthia. You might just want to stay cozy by the fire![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Oh, and Jamie, you really can't expect us to take you seriously that you are truly training if you keep slacking off and only putting in 40,000 meters a day.
I mean, "really!" Get with it.
Cynthia, thanks for the comments on the 1X. I don't think it will ever be my race, but I do think it helps me in the 8. I love a sweep boat, but my sweep coach keeps urging me to keep up the work in the single. So, I try to be a good girl and even have a sculling coach. (Poor woman cannot figure out why it is that I don't have the same power on the water as on the erg. Duh! It's easy to go for it when there is no chance of swimming!)
Keep up the great work everyone.

Deborah, please see the PM I sent you. You are doing incredibly well and the last thing you should do is get discouraged! You are going to have an amazing season.
My first race in the single, I flipped at 500m and it was hilarious. At least I got it out of the way early and it hasn't happened again (fingers crossed).

Jamie, I was just curious what your 2k/6k PBs (or at least recent bests) are. I'm just looking to compare splits for long distance rows.Jamie Pfeffer wrote:OK: You guys are motivating me to go to Boston. And my wife is on board.
