Stroke seat, where do you row in Florida. Are you planning to row in college and if so, potentially stay in state?

Male
Date April 2004
Time 6:12, Weight 74kg (Last ergo before state titles)
The real record though was hitting 100kg within 6months after stopping lightweight rowing after state titles.

Now 2007 just started training again 95kg, done no gym since 2004, pulling 7:14. Why did I stop training

the .67 comes from the increase in drag in a boat (water resistance) that accompanies an increase in weight. it's not a 1:1 correlation- instead, drag varies to the 2/3rds power of mass.

it doesn't make sense to use that "fitness formula " in the boat- the point of the formula is to translate erg-derived power to potential boat speed. in the boat, the laws of physics have already figured out the exact drag you are experiencing :)

cyclists commonly use watt/kg for a variety of situations, but strictly speaking this is only a good predictor on fairly slow climbs. on flat ground, speed varies by W/frontal surface area. on mixed terrain races, the relationship can be similar to what you have in the rowing weight adjuster (power varies to mass ^ 0.7 or so). tour de france winners are guys who can climb and time trial, so not necessarily the highest w/kg in the pack.

smaller people tend to have higher w/kg, which is why the best cycling climbers are very small. in rowing there is less of a weight penalty, and top rowers tend to be large.

marc

PS I'm not so large, and I wish this weight adjustment was more popular back when I was rowing. my best 6:10: @ 192lbs, is 22+... pretty good, but not quite ready for prime time. also, a long time ago...

if you can pull 6:12 at 74 kg, why didn't you drop a kilo or 2 and go to the Olympics? could you have gone lighter?
